Operation Homefront has established Operation Homefront Villages in a number of states. This is in order to support disabled service members who have been discharged and have had to leave their homes on base before they receive any compensation. In Operation Homefront Villages they can live rent free.

The first veterans hospital was The Naval Home in Philadelphia created in 1812 followed by the establishment of the Soldiers Home in 1853. Ten years later Congress created the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers in response to the high number of Civil War casualties.

‘The Grand Army of the Republic’ founded in 1866 was the first veterans support group. The organization was composed of veterans from the Union Army who fought in the Civil War. It lobbied congress for the provision of veterans’ pensions and supported voting rights for Afro-American veterans.

On November 11, 1921, the first Unknown Soldier was re-buried at Arlington National Cemetery. The tomb bears the inscription: “Here rests in honored glory An American Soldier Known but to God.” The Arlington National Cemetery is located in Virginia across the Potomac River from the Lincoln Memorial.

California is home to about 2.1 million veterans; Florida and Texas, 1.7 million each; and New York and Pennsylvania, 1 million each.
