An excellent column asking if the will of the voters will be respected regarding our state constitution requiring congressional age limits.

In the June 2024 election, North Dakotans passed Article XVI relating to congressional age limits (see NDLegis.gov/constitution). This year’s U.S. House election is theoretically the first to be subject to

ARTICLE: "Once again, she said she’s running: “Yeah, I’m going to run for re-election.” And once again, her spokesperson quickly walked back the comment, telling Axios that “no decision has been made.”

A media conundrum for the age of gerontocracy.

ARTICLE: "Quote of the Day - “The reason we picked the age of 80 was simply that the support is so overwhelming at that point. Some of the first people I talked to when I decided to take it on are my parents. They’re in their early 80s. And I asked my dad: ‘How do you feel about this? Am I crazy?’ And he said: ‘Son, at my age, I have got no business being in Congress.’ ” —Jared Hendrix, speaking about the recently passed age limit of 80 for North Dakota legislators""

INTERVIEW: “This is really being done in response to the fact that we don’t have Congressional term limits,” said Retire Congress North Dakota’s Chairperson Jared Hendrix. “Also, the fact that we don’t want the kinds of issues that we’ve seen with Senator Mitch McConnell, who’s obviously had a lot of episodes health-wise as have other members of Congress. The age limit measure's passage comes amid ongoing discussions about aging politicians

06/12/2024

A large majority of North Dakotans made it clear that they think members of Congress should retire, like everyone else. On the heels of a successful Term Limits Measure, this is another firm statement from North Dakota voters that they’re tired of career politicians that stay in office forever and lose touch with their constituencies. We’re very hopeful that this win will force a broader discussion in other states and across the country!

ARTICLE: "The measure provided a rare glimpse into how one state’s voters think about age at a time when questions over the effectiveness of older political leaders have been part of the national conversation."
