in 1991, an E-2C from VAW 125 Tigertails provided critical air control of the US Navy’s only two confirmed air-to-air kills of Desert Storm.

Flying from USS Saratoga (CV-60) as part of CVW-17, Air Control Officer LT John Joyce's all-important comm of "bandits off your nose, 15 miles" led to an immediate transition of the F/A-18's radar modes from air-to-surface into the air-to-air mode allowing for LCDR Fox and LT Mongillo to achieve a lock-on and destroy two MiG-21 aircraft. The E-2's timely communication and efficient weapons employment allowed the F/A-18's to retain their Mk-84 bombs, proceed in to their target area, and employ on the original targets: Iraqi airfields.
