Our Police Officers Retirement System Board of Trustees just celebrated a major milestone. Just over 80 years ago, on August 23,1944, the Police Department Pension Board held its first meeting.

Starting with just over $5,000 in assets in 1944, the Police Officers Retirement System has grown to nearly $2 billion in assets. It’s a tribute to the visionary leaders back then, as well as the many fine people who have served as Trustees since then, for creating and nurturing the system to where it is today.

Many of you are receiving Social Security, or soon will be. We came across an interesting article explaining some changes coming to Social Security in the next year. You can find it at the following link:

The Social Security Administration won't announce any final adjustments until the second week of October, but we can expect these three changes to take place in 2025.

Good news! All 3 retirement systems investment returns were good this past fiscal year. For the fiscal year ended June 30, 2024 the tentative investment returns were as follows:

Employees' Retirement System + 9.1%
Police Officers Retirement System + 11.2%
Uniformed Retirement System + 10.3%

These return numbers may change a little bit, as our Accounting Team completes the annual financial reports for FY 2024. But they should not change much.

All 3 systems' annual investment returns exceeded the 6.75% investment return assumption used by our actuary to determine the County's annual contributions to the systems. While there are other factors that affect the funding of the systems, it is always good when the systems' returns exceed the actuary's assumed return as it did this past year. Hats off to the systems' Chief Investment Officers for all of their hard work and expertise, as well as the dedication of the systems' Boards of Trustees.
