Thank you for inviting me to be a part of this great program! Lots of awesome people working for the greater good of our community.
Wildfire preparedness begins long before anyone sees the first puff of smoke in the air. The work completed before a wildfire happens helps make homes and families safer—and allows firefighters to respond more safely and effectively when every second matters.
On Wednesday, May 13, that is exactly what happened when a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens came together to help a neighbor reduce her risk of wildfire.
As we celebrated NFPA Wildfire Community Preparedness Day in partnership with Boerne High School’s Senior Service Day, 17 Boerne High School seniors, 2 staff advisors, members of the Hill Country Fire Coalition of Texas, the Buckers from Cordillera Ranch, and a few other volunteers worked side-by-side to reduce wildfire risk on the property of the widow of an Army Veteran who dedicated more than 20 years of service to our country.
Margaret Mead once said, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.”
On Wednesday, we witnessed exactly what that looks like.
This project was about more than cutting brush and creating defensible space. It was about young people in our community learning firsthand that neighbors helping neighbors matters. It was about students and adults working together to make our community safer, stronger, and more resilient.
We can only imagine the conversations that took place around kitchen tables that evening as students shared what they accomplished and how they helped their neighbor. Those conversations build awareness, inspire action, and remind us all that preparedness is a shared responsibility.
The Hill Country Fire Coalition of Texas extends its sincere appreciation to Boerne High School, Boerne ISD, the Buckers, and every volunteer who gave their time and energy to help protect a neighbor and strengthen our community.
Together, we are building a safer, more fire-adapted Kendall County—one property, one neighborhood, and one act of service at a time.
