Did you know that 13 people in Bergen County die each month as a result of overdose?

August 31st is recognized as International Overdose Awareness day, an annual campaign to end overdose, remember without stigma those who have died, and acknowledge the grief of the family and friends left behind.

Signs and purple flags are currently displayed in front of Borough Hall aimed to raise awareness about this public health crisis.

If you or someone you love are facing a substance use challenge or crisis, call or text 988.

As we step into Black History Month, the Fair Lawn Health Department is proud to honor and celebrate the invaluable contributions of Black Americans to the fields of medicine, public health, and wellness. Their groundbreaking work, often achieved in the face of formidable challenges, has paved the way for advancements that benefit us all.

This month, we're highlighting the achievements of pioneers like Dr. Patricia Bath(seen below), the first African American to complete a residency in ophthalmology and the inventor of the Laserphaco Probe for cataract treatment; Dr. Daniel Hale Williams, who performed the first successful open-heart surgery; and nurse Mary Eliza Mahoney, the first African American licensed nurse, whose dedication set the standard for nurses today.

We also recognize the ongoing contributions of Black professionals in healthcare who continue to inspire and lead, breaking barriers and fostering inclusivity. Their dedication not only enhances our community's health but also enriches the fabric of our society with their leadership, compassion, and resilience.

Let's take this opportunity to learn, reflect, and engage in meaningful conversations that propel us toward a more inclusive and healthy future for all. Together, we can honor the legacy and ongoing contributions of Black Americans to our health and our nation.
