🇺🇸 AMVETS HAWAII | LEGISLATIVE UPDATE — OCTOBER 2026 | EDITION 2

TECHNOLOGY & NATIONAL SECURITY: WHO WILL BUILD THE FUTURE?

This edition focuses on federal legislative priorities affecting military readiness and America’s defense industrial base.

🏛️ LEGISLATIVE FOCUS:
• Strengthen U.S. advanced manufacturing
• Secure critical defense supply chains
• Expand skilled-workforce and veteran employment pathways
• Maintain defense production and surge capacity
• Strengthen Indo-Pacific logistics and infrastructure
• Support cooperation with trusted allies and partners

For Hawaii, these policies directly affect military readiness, regional resilience, and our role in the Indo-Pacific.

The goal: ensure America can invent, build, sustain, and secure the technologies our service members depend upon.

🇺🇸 AMVETS DEPARTMENT OF HAWAII | OCTOBER 2026 LEGISLATIVE UPDATE — EDITION 1

AMVETS Department of Hawaii is pleased to share our October 2026 Legislative Update, keeping Hawaii’s Veterans, military families, survivors, and community partners informed about important developments in Washington and across the Department of Veterans Affairs.

This month’s edition covers:

🔹 Veterans Benefits: VA reports processing more than 3 million disability claims during FY2026, while reporting continued reductions in the claims backlog and processing times.

🔹 Veterans Health Care: VA has announced new informed-consent requirements for psychotropic medications scheduled to begin in 2027.

🔹 Military Survivors: Bipartisan legislation would provide surviving spouses and children additional time to place eligible military death gratuity and SGLI benefits into certain tax-advantaged accounts.

🔹 Military & Veteran Employment: A look at the continuing civilian employment challenges facing Veterans, transitioning service members, and military spouses.

🔹 Higher Education & College Athletics: Congress continues work on legislation addressing college athlete eligibility, transfers, compensation, scholarships, and protections for women’s and Olympic sports.

🔹 Federal Policy: This edition also provides updates on energy and data-center costs, Title IX policy, federal law-enforcement leadership, and U.S.–China relations.

Knowledge is an important part of advocacy. We remain committed to keeping our members informed about federal actions that may affect Veterans, service members, their families, survivors, and the communities we serve.

🇺🇸 AMVETS HAWAII AWARDED $683,905 VA SU***DE PREVENTION GRANT

AMVETS Hawaii is proud to announce that the AMVETS Hawaii Service Foundation has received a $683,905 FY27 award from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs through the Staff Sergeant Parker Gordon Fox Su***de Prevention Grant Program (SSG Fox SPGP).

This one-year grant will strengthen our community-based su***de prevention efforts across Honolulu County, with a goal of serving 150 Veterans through outreach, screening, case management, Veteran peer support, su***de-prevention education, stability support, and connections to VA and community resources.

The mission is especially important because VA’s FY27 Grantee Toolkit reports that 61% of Veterans who died by su***de in 2023 were not receiving VHA care in the year of, or year before, their death. SSG Fox SPGP_Grantee Toolkit_FY27.pdf

Our focus is simple: reach Veterans where they are, build trust before a crisis occurs, and make sure no Veteran has to navigate the path to support alone.

This work will bring Veterans, families, peer support, community organizations, and VA partners together to strengthen the network of support available in our community.

🇺🇸 GREAT NEWS FOR HAWAII’S VETERANS!

AMVETS Hawaii Service Foundation Corp. is proud to announce the renewal of our VA Adaptive Sports Grant, with a federal award of $427,038 to continue expanding adaptive fitness, sports, recreation, and community engagement opportunities for Veterans in Hawaii.

This renewal represents more than funding—it represents continued investment in our Veterans and in a program built around movement, connection, teamwork, resilience, and purpose.

Through the AMVETS Hawaii Adaptive Fitness & Sports Program at the AMVETS West Oahu Veterans Center, Veterans will continue to have opportunities to participate in adaptive fitness and sports programming, including our Big Tire Bootcamp and other activities designed to bring Veterans together and support active, healthy lives.

We extend our sincere appreciation to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, National Veterans Sports Programs and Special Events, for its continued confidence in our organization and mission.

We also recognize Program Director Alim H. Shabazz, our coaches, volunteers, community partners, and especially our Veterans whose participation and commitment have helped make this program what it is today.

$427,038 renewed. One mission. One ʻOhana. Veterans serving Veterans.

We are excited for another year of building opportunities and strengthening our Veteran community across Hawaii.
