Today, 26 volunteers and city employees came together for our 12th Block-by-Block event as part of United Way of Southwestern Indiana’s Day of Caring.

This year’s event carried special meaning as we marked the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001. On this National Day of Service and Remembrance, our community honored that spirit by rolling up our sleeves and serving our neighbors.

Today’s work also reflects our ongoing commitment to strengthening Evansville’s neighborhoods. From removing our 125th blighted property through our Fight Blight program, to improving neighborhoods through Block-by-Block and bringing new life to our parks, we’re working every day to make Evansville a stronger place to call home.

Today, as we mark the 25th anniversary of 9/11 and the National Day of Remembrance, we honored the spirit of service that continues to bring us together.

We kicked off the day with United Way for the largest Day of Service in our city, where I had the privilege of presenting the McGary Jones Visionary & Humanitarian Award to Dr. Mark Browning, a U.S. Navy veteran, physician, educator, historian, and community servant.

Next, we headed to Block-by-Block in the Glenwood/Culver neighborhood, where volunteers and City crews worked side by side to make a visible difference in the neighborhood.

We closed out the afternoon at Mission BBQ in remembrance of September 11, honoring the first responders, firefighters, and police officers who serve and protect our communities.

25 years later, we remember by serving, honoring, and standing together.

It was great to join Habitat for Humanity for the launch of their fourth build through the Building Homes and Health initiative and to see the Johnson family getting closer to homeownership.

This is a great example of what can happen when partners come together to support families and strengthen our neighborhoods.

Thank you, Deaconess, for believing in this City and for being a part of our journey to build a stronger, more connected emergency response system. We’re excited about what this means for our residents and the work ahead.

We’re excited to announce a strategic, multi-year partnership between the City of Evansville, Evansville Fire Department, and Deaconess to support the City’s new fire-based Emergency Medical Services (EMS) system.

Key initiatives include enhanced training opportunities for firefighters, paramedics, and EMTs; the integration of clinical protocols to improve coordination between EMS and hospital-based care; and investments in technology designed to improve responder safety and patient outcomes.

Among the first projects is the accelerated rollout of a station alerting system that routes emergency calls only to the responding station. By reducing unnecessary sleep disruptions for first responders, this technology supports workforce wellness, operational readiness, and improved emergency response.

Through this partnership, Deaconess will provide several hundred thousand dollars in annual support to help build a stronger, more integrated emergency response system for Evansville residents. The investment will also accelerate repayment to the Casino Capital Improvement Fund and strengthen the city’s financial foundation as we continue this important work.

It’s always helpful to hear directly from local business owners. I had lunch today with John at Metro Diner and we talked about the challenges businesses are facing with rising energy and gas costs, including where advocacy is needed at the state level. We also talked about Metro Diner’s experience working with the City, and I was glad to hear it has been a positive one.

MYAC gives Evansville students a chance to share their ideas, connect with community leaders, get involved in local government, and help make a real difference in our city.

If you’re a student in grades 8–12, this is your chance to get involved and help shape Evansville’s future. Applications are open now at www.evansvillegov.org/MYAC.

The City of Evansville is now accepting applications for the Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council (MYAC), a 10-month program for students in grades 8–12. MYAC connects local youth with opportunities for civic engagement, community service, collaboration with community leaders, and meaningful ways to make a difference in local government. I’m launching a new Attendance Challenge focused on helping families with everyday expenses while encouraging students to be in school and ready to learn.

Through a new partnership with EVSC (Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation) and the Evansville Promise Neighborhood, 37 families each month will receive a $300 Housing Stability gift card that can be used toward rent, utilities, or groceries.

Students attending schools in the Evansville Promise Neighborhood who have perfect attendance the previous month will be entered into a lottery for their family to receive a card.

This nine-month pilot is another way we are supporting families, removing barriers, and reinforcing an important message that every day in the classroom counts.
