HAPPY PRIDE: For over 50 years, June has been celebrated as LGBTQ+ Pride Month in honor of the transgender women of color, drag queens, and community leaders who fought against discrimination at Stonewall. This year, Pride Month offers an opportunity celebrate this history as well as inclusion and diversity all across our community. Eugene is proud to sponsor the Eugene-Springfield LGBTQ+ Pride Festival on Saturday, June 27.

WILDFIRE PREP: May has been Wildfire Awareness Month—three quick updates:

1) TODAY, please sign up for *LaneAlerts.org*, our community’s emergency notification system. You’ll receive push notifications in the event of a nearby emergency, including wildfire. SIGN UP TODAY.

2) While we can’t control snowpack, our City of Eugene Parks & Open Space team has been working to reduce fuel loads (dead, dry, dense vegetation) in parks and natural areas. We’ve completed fuels reduction work in 1,300 acres of parks and green space—this is an important contribution toward reducing wildfire risk to our community.

3) On Tuesday, June 10, Eugene City Council will hold a work session on our Community Wildfire Protection Plan developed with Springfield — the draft is now open for public comment. The plan includes valuable information about high exposure areas and actions to mitigate and reduce wildfire risk. Tune in on June 10 to learn more.

MURAL AMAZE: Arts deep dive! So refreshing. This morning, I had the opportunity to join a group of neighbors on a *fantastic* tour of Eugene’s 20x21 Mural Project in Downtown Eugene. A walking, talking delight. Made even more so by our public art champion tour guide, .

We started at Noisette Pastry Kitchen, where ‘s snoozing superscale duo is right across the street, and then visited the beautiful bonus panel by (from Kathmandu) and “We Rise” by Rachel Wolfe-Goldsmith at Downtown, the stunning at The Kiva, and incredible and at the McDonald Theater overlooking Lane Transit District Downtown Station.

We walked a few meandering alleys to see iconic portraits by and , and found the prolific near Falling Sky Brewing and First Christian Church. We kept encountering the stencil pied piper among doorways and parapets, as well as many other murals who have joined the city since this project was first imagined. “Feast Before the Flood” by is a stunning favorite, but I’d never known that had hidden so much whimsy in plain sight. The vivid near more trompe l’oeil HVAC by Dan Witz was where we wrapped the tour. But there’s so much more…what a legacy these artists composed across our community.

Eugene is a city that cares deeply about public art, and art will be a critical component to other civic, infrastructure, and placemaking projects in our future. Enjoy these murals whenever you can. The 20x21 project brought a fleet of internationally known artists into conversation with our local Eugene-based stars, and this extraordinary project was made possible by collaboration among City, nonprofit, arts, and business organizations. Such shoulders to stand on.

STATEMENT FROM MAYOR KNUDSON: Our community will hear more about this incident and what is learned from the Independent Auditor’s investigation of it. Below is the statement I shared at the beginning of the Eugene City Council meeting tonight, May 11, 2026:

“On Saturday, now-former Eugene Police Department officer Martin Siller was caught using racist, dehumanizing language on video footage captured by his bodycam in January 2026.

I am infuriated by the behavior of this now-resigned officer. The casual, off-handed nature of his derogatory and offensive conversation is deeply disturbing. This type of behavior has no place in public service or in our police department. This former officer violated our values, contradicted our policies, and betrayed the community’s trust.

Over the past 48 hours, I have been in touch with our City Council, City leadership, Independent Police Auditor, Police Commission leadership, and community stakeholders. Our Independent Police Auditor had initiated an investigation into this incident before Siller resigned, and EPD has submitted this incident to Oregon’s state policing standards board. While it has been determined that no other EPD officers were involved in this incident, we are committed to a thorough review of police policies, training, supervisory practices, and organizational culture. Our department knows the perspective captured by this video evidence cannot represent our local employees or our department.

As your mayor, I want to directly acknowledge the harm and our commitment to the important work ahead. Racism in any form is unacceptable, and we will not excuse nor tolerate it from those who serve our city. Affirmatively, we can do more to build understanding, awareness, and relationships across our community. Building and sustaining trust requires acknowledgement, reflection, action, and continuous recommitment to partnership.

Every individual—regardless of race, background, or circumstance—deserves dignity, fairness, and respect. I support our City’s stated commitment to a thorough policy review, enhanced training, and cultural change, and the Independent Police Auditor’s ongoing investigation is an essential component of this work. We are committed to ensuring that accountability is not only promised but felt in our community.”

UNITED FRONT: Lane County is the size of Connecticut, and the way we lobby together for community needs has inspired partners all around the country. This year’s trip was focused on agency conversations about economic development, infrastructure, jobs, housing needs, wildfire mitigation, transit capacity, behavioral health needs, and the importance of fixing the Medicaid reimbursement rates set in 2025. Highlights were time with Senator Jeff Merkley Senator Ron Wyden . Thanks for your questions and messages from my last Minute—it’s a very full trip, but I found 45min for a Mall 5K and some Lincoln moments. He put a bird on it, which is obviously encouragement across the ages.

FOR WORKERS: Every year on May 1, International Workers’ Day honors labor and our working class. Throughout our history, workers have sacrificed to deliver the basic needs — food, roads, housing, health care — that every community relies upon. Through decades of organizing, negotiating, picketing, and protesting, labor unions secured vital workplace protections that all workers rely on today. Today by mayoral proclamation, we honor the workers who lost their lives to deliver progress and recommit to a future to find by safety and opportunity.

Less than two years ago, we celebrated the groundbreaking for the construction of these 81 new family homes with an on-site early learning center—and it was wonderful to celebrate their completion yesterday. 🌱🌳
