Meet Juan ๐Ÿ‘‹

Juan is graduating with a bachelor's degree in Educational Foundations. Juan chose this career path with dreams of becoming a teacher to help children learn, grow, and feel supported, as teachers did for them in school.

Juanโ€™s favorite memory at UO has been attending football games, where the energy, excitement, and sense of community made them feel incredibly proud to be part of the UO family and gave them traditions they will always cherish. At the same time, the professors and friends Juan has met have had the biggest impact on them, supporting and inspiring them through challenges while helping them grow and creating meaningful, unforgettable experiences.

Following graduation, Juan plans to continue to work in elementary schools and pursue their passion of becoming a teacher.

Juan encourages others to be present and enjoy their college experience. "Take advantage of every opportunity, make memories with the people around you, and donโ€™t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone. These years go by much faster than you think, so enjoy the little moments and take it all in." ๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿ’›๐ŸŽ“

Meet Avery ๐Ÿ‘‹

Avery Turner is graduating from the Prevention Science Doctoral program. Her journey began when she worked as a peer educator with the Substance Abuse Prevention Education team as an undergraduate student. Inspired and driven to by that work, Avery has since been determined to mitigate the impacts of heavy substance use on college populations.

Avery is grateful for the time spent with faculty and classmates. She is thankful for her advisor, Lorry Lokey Chair in Education Leslie Leve, who supported and guided Avery throughout her entire PhD program. She credits her with developing her into a skilled researcher.

Following graduation, Avery is off to the University of Michigan to begin a postdoctoral fellowship focused on alcohol research.

She encourages future students to engage with community partners as much as possible. Going to a community organization, asking them what they need, and being able to deliver on those needs is a rare privilege for researchers that needs utilized more often. ๐Ÿฆ†๐ŸŽ“

Meet one of your 2026 College of Education Commencement speakers! ๐ŸŽ“๐Ÿฆ†

Carli Feist is graduating with her master's degree in Communication Disorders and Sciences. She is passionate about many clinical areas within the field, including augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), pediatric feeding, social communication, language development, instrumental swallowing assessments (MBSS and FEES), and cognitive communication.

Carli is grateful for the clinical opportunities the College of Education provided, specifically group therapy sessions in the HEDCO Clinic or feeding premature infants at Doernbecher Children's Hospital.

After graduation Carli plans to pursue a clinical fellowship year to support communication and swallowing across the lifespan, with hopes to someday return to the schools and serve specialized classrooms in special education.

Meet Skylar ๐Ÿ‘‹

Skylar Steffes is graduating from our School Psychology Portland program with an Education Specialist Degree. As an Indigenous woman, Skylar emphasizes that inclusion must be actively built, not just discussed. She is driven to advocate for students while helping create systems that support inclusive, empowering environments.

Skylar describes her time in the program as both professionally enriching and personally transformative. Opportunities to attend conferences and present her work helped her grow and build meaningful connections. During a particularly difficult period when she lost her father, the compassion and support from her cohort and faculty had a profound impact. "It reminded me of what truly matters: while a job can sometimes become 'just a job,' and graduate school can feel like 'just graduate school,' but the connections we build, the relationships we nurture, and the ways we integrate our passions into our work are what give those experiences meaning."

Following graduation, Skylar has accepted a position as a School Psychologist with the Parkrose School District in Oregon. She also plans to continue to serve as a co-lead for the Indigenous American Subcommittee of National Association of School Psychologists (NASP).

She encourages current and future students to find their โ€œwhy," and continue to seek opportunities that align with their passions and values. "Graduate school can be exhausting and, at times, all-consuming, so it has been important for me to continually reconnect with what all of this work is for and move forward with intention." ๐Ÿ’š๐ŸŽ“๐Ÿฆ†
