Volunteers Needed! Chittenden County CJC Community Advisory Board

Do you love your community and want to have a voice in the future of our county’s Community Justice Center? The Chittenden County Community Justice Center (CJC) is looking for members of its new Community Advisory Board (CAB). Join representatives from throughout the county to assist in identifying CJC priorities, raising awareness about community and restorative justice, and gathering input from the community regarding the work of the CJC. We’re looking for a diverse set of people with a variety of experiences to lend their voices and enthusiasm.

This will be the first CAB of its kind with a set of draft by-laws to begin with and modify as the group sees fit. In-person meetings will be held around the county and led by two co-chairs nominated and selected by the group.

Time commitment: roughly two hours/meeting for six meetings/year.

Who we’re looking for: anyone 16 and up who is interested in non-punitive methods of seeking repair and accountability related to harm, crime, and conflict in our communities. We’re especially interested in those who can bring diverse representation--geographic, racial, cultural, gender, lived experience in the criminal legal system, ability, etc.—to help bring an inclusive and equitable lens to the work. You will be serving as an ambassador for the CJC and advising the director in future visioning work of the organization.

Next steps: Interested? Please go to https://www.burlingtoncjc.org/advisory-board to read the draft By-Laws and to apply.

The weather is certainly warming up- and with that comes a few reminders for your safety.

In Essex there are a few 'cooling shelters'. These are located at Brownell Library, Essex Free Library,
Alternatively the Burnham Memorial Library in Colchester, and the Dorothy Alling Library in Williston will be open for folks to cool off.

Older adults, young children, people who are pregnant, outdoor workers, and those with chronic health conditions, mental health conditions, disabilities, or limited access to cooling are at increased risk of heat-related illness. People experiencing homelessness or living without air conditioning face particularly elevated risks from prolonged heat exposure and dehydration. Certain prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs, and illicit substances significantly increase vulnerability because they interfere with the body's natural ability to regulate temperature, stay hydrated, and perceive heat distress. Please check on your neighbors and call for help if / when needed.

The Maple Street Pool, Sand Hill Recreation Pool and Indian Brook Reservoir are great locations to swim and get cooled down as well. Note that bodies of water are still dangerously cold at this time of year, and time in water should be limited to prevent cold water shock and hypothermia.

When to seek help? Muscle cramps, heavy sweating, nausea, headache or light-headedness may all indicate a heat-related illness. Most heat-related illnesses can be treated with fluids and by resting in a cooler place. If symptoms persist or get worse, or someone you are with seems confused or loses consciousness, dial 9-1-1 and get immediate medical help.

Main Street Sidewalk Replacement Project
The Main Street Sidewalk Replacement Project is tentatively scheduled to start June 8, 2026. Poulin Companies, LLC will replace the existing sidewalks along Main Street between Pleasant Street and Railroad Street, and between Grove Street and Ivy Lane.

The contractor will attempt to maintain two-way traffic to the extent possible, with periods of alternating one-way traffic as necessary. Traffic control will be in place to help direct traffic.
Portions of the sidewalks will be closed within the work zone, with appropriate pedestrian detours and signs in place to direct pedestrian traffic.

Throughout construction, the City Engineer will send daily emails about progress and the anticipated schedule, as they relate to access and disruptions to the adjacent properties. An initial email will be sent on June 5th as a reminder of the June 8th start date.

To receive daily project email updates that include information on project status and scheduling, please send an email requesting to be added to the project email distribution list to [email protected].

The City will start its yearly paving work soon. Church Street, East Street, and parts of Main Street are scheduled for paving, and all work should be finished by August 28.

On May 31, the Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans) will begin repaving the eastbound side of Route 15, from Susie Wilson Road to West Street Extension, with a targeted finish date of June 5. This roadwork will be completed between 7 pm and 6 am.

City officials remind residents that construction schedules are subject to change due to weather or unforeseen circumstances on site. Drivers should expect possible delays and watch for detours and changing road conditions throughout the summer.
