As we commemorate the 25th anniversary of September 11, we pause to remember the lives lost and honor the courage and sacrifice of the firefighters, police officers, EMTs, and public safety workers who answered the call that day.

We also reflect on September 11 as a National Day of Service and Remembrance, a day that reminds us of the care, bravery, and unity that carried our nation through one of its darkest moments.

That spirit is part of who we are today. And, twenty-five years later, we remember, we honor, and we carry that spirit forward.

Lost food in last week's storm? If you receive SNAP benefits, you may be eligible for replacement benefits.

To get replacement SNAP/EBT Benefits:
⏰ You must request replacement benefits within 10 days of when the disaster occurred, so by September 13, 2026.
📞 Contact Erie County Assistance Office (CAO) at 814-461-2000 or call the Statewide Customer Service Center at 1-877-395-8930.
📝 Complete a replacement affidavit documenting how much food you lost. Forms are available through the Erie County Assistance Office or at www.dhs.pa.gov/SNAP.
📲 Submit your completed affidavit through COMPASS or the myCOMPASS PA mobile app.

Crews are continuing to work as quickly and safely as possible to clear streets across the City. Right now, our top priority remains clearing streets from curb to curb so residents and emergency responders can get where they need to go. Our crews will keep working while the City continues to assess the full impact of the storm and determine what additional cleanup and resources are needed.

As we continue cleaning up, please keep these important reminders in mind:

🌳 Tree debris pickup
Over the next few days, City crews are focused on clearing debris to assist property owners only. Private contractors are required to remove debris. If you are able to safely move debris from your property, please place it between the curb and sidewalk in a pile so our crews can pick it up.

🏡 Who is responsible for tree removal?
• City-owned trees: Trees located in parks and boulevards are the City's responsibility.
• Private property trees: All other trees are the responsibility of the property owner. If it is safe to do so, take photos or videos to document any damage, and contact your homeowner’s insurance company for assistance.
• Private contractors are responsible for the removal of tree debris.

❌ Please do NOT chainsaw or cut down damaged trees yourself. There may be live power lines in or around downed trees that you cannot see. We want everyone to stay safe, so please leave this work to trained professionals.

🔥 Do NOT burn tree debris!
Per City ordinance, residents may not burn trees or tree debris.

Thank you for continuing to look out for one another and for helping our crews work as safely and efficiently as possible. We know there is a lot of work ahead, and we will keep working alongside you as our community recovers.

With power outages still affecting many residents, the City has coordinated with community partners to provide additional resources and support to residents across Erie.

Locations are offering a variety of services, including:

As we prepare for another potential round of storms, City crews continue working around the clock to clear roadways and respond to impacts as quickly and safely as possible.

Please take a few minutes to review these important safety reminders:
📱 Conserve your phone battery. Turn on low power mode, lower your screen brightness, and limit nonessential use.
🔌 Unplug unnecessary electronics during an outage to help prevent damage from power surges when electricity is restored.
🧊 Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed as much as possible during a power outage to keep food cold longer.
🧯 Know where your emergency supplies are including flashlights, batteries, and first-aid.
🚗 If a tree falls on your car, please contact your insurance company first. Once you’ve contacted them, then please call the Streets Department to remove it: 814-870-1340.

⚠️ If you’re using a generator during a power outage, please remember these important safety tips:
- Keep generators outside and at least 20 feet away from your home, doors, and windows to prevent carbon monoxide from entering your home.
- Never connect a generator directly to building wiring unless a qualified electrician has installed the proper transfer equipment first.
- Always use heavy-duty extension cords and check them regularly for overheating or damage.
- Most generators aren't designed to run continuously for extended periods, so please shut it off periodically so it doesn’t overheat.
- Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for safe operation and maintenance.

👉 We will also be sharing additional resources tomorrow morning, including locations offering cool, safe spaces, places where residents can charge their phones and other devices, and locations offering laundry, and additional services. Follow our social media for updates.

✨ Remember to take care of yourself and your neighbors. Power outages and severe weather can be stressful, so please check in on family, friends, and neighbors, especially older adults, people with disabilities, and anyone who may need additional assistance.

The City of Erie has officially declared a State of Emergency following severe weather that caused significant damage throughout the City on September 2 and 3.

City crews have been working hard to assess damage and clear roadways. The City’s immediate priority is clearing streets from curb to curb to ensure safe passage for residents and emergency responders.

🌳 Downed Trees and Debris
- City crews are aware of all downed trees in the City of Erie.
- If a tree has fallen into a city street, City crews will respond and work to clear it. Residents should not attempt to remove trees from roadways themselves.
- Residents with storm debris should place it between the curb and sidewalk for collection.
- Residents should stay away from downed trees, as they may be under tension or in contact with electrical lines.
- If a tree has fallen onto a home or caused significant property damage, residents should contact their insurance company. If you are trapped in your home or facing immediate emergency, call 911.

Branches and Trees on City Property
- If a tree or large branch is down in a city boulevard, residents should report it by calling Matthew Falcone at 814-923-3597 for assessment and removal.
- If a tree on private property is leaning or otherwise presents a potential hazard, residents should contact Matthew Falcone at 814-923-3597 or a certified arborist to have the tree assessed.

⚡ Power Lines
- Stay away from all downed power lines. Treat every downed line as energized and call 911 to report it.

🗑️ Refuse collection remains on its normal schedule.

Due to storm damage and ongoing safety assessments, 15 City parks and facilities are closed until further notice. See the full list at https://www.erie.pa.us/community/public_safety.php.

Residents are urged to use extreme caution at all other City parks and recreational facilities as crews continue to clear storm-related hazards.
