Wildlands Conservancy

Wildlands Conservancy We've been creating lasting connections to nature since 1973. Wildlands Conservancy owns and manages 14 nature preserves.
(1)

All of them are different- because people experience nature differently. Some of our preserves are readily accessible, with parking, trails and restrooms, while others are more rugged, accessible only by watercraft, or by appointment only. Visit www.wildlandspa.org/our-preserves for more information.

It's weasel week, and today is a good day to be grateful that weasels aren't large mammals. Pennsylvania's smallest weasel is called the least weasel, and it has one of the strongest bite forces pound-for-pound compared to any mammal worldwide. The only other animal in the world with a stronger bite force for its proportions is the Tasmanian devil.

Try saying "least weasel" five times fast!

It's Weasel Week! What does the word weasel bring up for you? You've probably heard the phrases, "to weasel your way out of something," or "pop goes the weasel."

It seems funny and trivial, but jokes aside, weasels haven't historically been included in conservation. These phrases are a reflection of the culture surrounding weasels over the past century. They're misunderstood to be violent pests, but they play a vital role in the ecosystem.

We at Wildlands are the weasel people, here to give them the conservation spotlight they deserve. Did you know? A group of weasels may be referred to as a โ€œboogle,โ€ โ€œconfusion,โ€ โ€œgang,โ€ or โ€œpack." ๐Ÿ”— Visit wildlandspa.org/weasels to learn more fascinating facts about weasels!

Thank you, Mark Demko and Lehigh Valley Live for spreading the good news about the beginning of Wildlands Conservancy's three-year study surveying small mammal population and habitat in the Lehigh Valley and Lehigh River watershed! While weasels are included in this small mammal study, it focuses on a diversity of small mammals identified as Species of Greatest Conservation Need (SGCN) by the Pennsylvania Wildlife Action Plan.

Weโ€™re celebrating WEASEL WEEK because Wildlands is continuing our meaningful weasel population and habitat studies! All week long, join us on social media as we geek out about this member of the subfamily Mustelidae.๐ŸŒพ๐Ÿฆฆ ๐Ÿพ We are excited to begin a three-year study on these neglected mammals with a bad reputation thatโ€™s totally undeserved. Letโ€™s give it up for this small but mighty mammal! ๐Ÿ‘

All of these trail camera photos come from research done by Kate Ebel, Wildlandsโ€™ senior restoration ecologist, who has weasel photos down to a science.

We know youโ€™re really looking forward to the day you can come across an all-new bridge and return to our beloved Dorothy Rider Pool Wildlife Sanctuary. We receive your emails and DMs and phone calls regularly asking, โ€œIs the bridge fixed yet?โ€

Having you remain by our side this past year is ultimately how weโ€™ve been able to keep our mission alive and moving forward as we continue navigating operations without public access at the sanctuary, due to the bridge collapse last spring. We thank you for your grace, patience, and your steadโ€” in the form of kind words and financial support.

We share your grief. Your frustration. And your disappointment, too. All we want is to be back at the sanctuary with you.

And while weโ€™re not there yet, there is some good news that brings us to your social media feed today: ๐—ช๐—ฒ ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ ๐—ถ๐—ป ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐—ณ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ฎ๐—น ๐˜€๐˜๐—ฎ๐—ด๐—ฒ๐˜€ ๐—ผ๐—ณ ๐—ผ๐˜‚๐—ฟ ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ฑ๐—ผ๐—ฟ ๐˜€๐—ฒ๐—น๐—ฒ๐—ฐ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป ๐—ฝ๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐—ฐ๐—ฒ๐˜€๐˜€ ๐—ณ๐—ผ๐—ฟ ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐—ถ๐—ป๐˜€๐˜๐—ฎ๐—น๐—น๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป ๐—ผ๐—ณ ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐—ป๐—ฒ๐˜„ ๐—ฏ๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—ฑ๐—ด๐—ฒ, ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ ๐—ฐ๐—ผ๐—ป๐˜€๐˜๐—ฟ๐˜‚๐—ฐ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป ๐˜„๐—ถ๐—น๐—น ๐—ฏ๐—ฒ๐—ด๐—ถ๐—ป ๐˜„๐—ถ๐˜๐—ต๐—ถ๐—ป ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐—ป๐—ฒ๐˜…๐˜ ๐—บ๐—ผ๐—ป๐˜๐—ต.

Thank you again for your continued encouragement, concern, and support. It means everything to have you right here with us as we continue advancing plans to welcome you, your friends, family, and neighborsโ€”along with the entire communityโ€”back to our one and only Dorothy Rider Pool Wildlife Sanctuary.

Plant Trivia Time! Do you know this native plant that grows at Wildlands Conservancyโ€™s ๐Ÿ“ South Mountain Preserve? HINTS:

๐ŸŒผ It produces globe-shaped clusters of greenish-white flowers from a separate flower stalk than its leaves come from.

๐ŸŒฟ Currently, this plantโ€™s leaves are a deep bronze color. Theyโ€™ll change to green during the summer, and yellow or deep red in the fall.

๐Ÿซš Its roots were used in the past as a substitute for sarsaparilla, and in 1960, it was removed from the industry due to health concerns by the FDA.

๐Ÿป The berries of this plant provided sustenance to wildlife, including black bears, moose in the north, and birds like hermit thrush, wood thrush, Swainsonโ€™s thrush, ruffed grouse, and white-throated sparrow.

Our Supporters' Reception was an evening of appreciation and reflection for those who champion protected lands, cleaner waters, and educating a tomorrow for conservation.

Every spring, our Supporters' Reception gathers together the Wildlands Conservancy community who make our mission of a protected and connected Lehigh Valley possible. Amid challenges last year, we were carried forward by the support, thoughtful concern and encouragement of many of the friendly faces at yesterday's Supporters' Reception.

There's a lot more in store for this year as we uphold our promise of a community living connected to nature. Big things are on the horizon, so stay tuned!

๐Ÿข Box turtles ๐Ÿค mayapples ๐Ÿ€

Did you know that box turtles are thought to be the main distributors of mayapple seeds?

They are just the right height to munch on mayappleโ€™s fruits that will appear later in the year along the stem, where the flower is pictured here. The fruit is toxic to people, but turtlesโ€™ digestion increases the likelihood that the seed will germinate.

Happy May from the mayapple!
