Over the last two years, we’ve taken some of the most aggressive steps anywhere in South Carolina to get control of growth - and last night we took another major step forward with nine ordinances from the Smart Growth Committee aimed at managing growth.
County Council has:
• Increased minimum lot sizes - twice
• Put county-wide impact fees in place
• Adopted a new Comprehensive Plan
• Stood up the Smart Growth Rewrite Committee to overhaul our ZLDR
• Paused major subdivision development with a moratorium
And now, we’re building on that momentum.
Last night, Council passed first reading on nine ordinances - including a permit allocation system that caps residential building permits county-wide, a requirement for green spaces in neighborhoods that are REAL green spaces, and design standards.
To my knowledge, we would be the first county in South Carolina to implement many of these efforts.
That’s a big deal.
This isn’t about stopping growth - it is about managing it responsibly.
Taken together, these ordinances - and the work leading up to them - represent one of the most comprehensive efforts to address growth anywhere in the state.
If you want a breakdown of the nine ordinances, here’s a good overview:
