After years of dedicated service, K-9 Layka is officially retiring.

From her very first day in the field in 2017—when she alerted to her first drug load—Layka never slowed down. She proudly served alongside EPPD Narcotics and Patrol, the Sheriff’s Department, DEA, FBI, and U.S. Postal Inspectors, helping remove dangerous narcotics and illegal proceeds from our community.

Her career totals speak volumes:
• Over 3,000 lbs of ma*****na
• Co***ne, methamphetamine, he**in, fentanyl, and more
• Over $575,000 in U.S. currency seized

Today, we celebrate the well-earned retirement of K-9 Layka and honor her dedicated service alongside her handler, Officer Salvador Vargas. After more than eight years of commitment to our community, Layka will now enjoy a comfortable and loving retirement at home with Officer Vargas.

Layka was originally purchased through HIDTA funds and has spent the last 8½ years serving as part of the West Texas HIDTA Source City Metro Narcotics Task Force, where she and Officer Vargas worked tirelessly to support narcotics investigations and keep our region safe.

Please join us in thanking Layka and Officer Vargas for their outstanding service and wishing them both the very best in this next chapter!
