Throwback Thursday to Mr. Fleet’s class at Sageland Elementary, where learning looked a lot like this. Teacher Appreciation Week has me grateful for every educator who shaped me, and for teachers like my old classmate Erica, now Coach Rodriguez at Del Valle HS, carrying that same torch forward. Full circle.

I’m a proud product of El Paso’s public schools and I’ll keep fighting for them, our teachers, and our students in Austin. To every teacher reading this, thank you. We see you and we appreciate you more than words could ever say.

Four town halls across District 77 this May to talk through what’s coming out of Austin: new state ID and documentation requirements, redistricting updates, pending DWI legislation, the proposal to rename the Cesar Chavez stretch of Loop 375, and many other topics, including those you want to discuss. Discussion topics will include Texas documentation requirements for state services and licenses, redistricting updates, pending DWI legislation, and the renaming of the Cesar Chavez stretch of Loop 375.

The proposed DHS mega detention facility in Socorro could use 850,000 to 1.6 million gallons of water per day, roughly the equivalent of 2 to 4 data centers. That’s why four dozen Texas House Democrats joined me in sending a letter to the El Paso Water Public Service Board raising concerns about the impact this level of demand could have on our region’s water supply.

My office also provided public comment emphasizing the need to fully understand this facility’s water demand, especially as the federal government bypasses the environmental reviews that would normally disclose it. Following the discussion, the Public Service Board voted to require the Lower Valley Water District to provide water demand projections and supply plans to ensure compliance with its wholesale agreement. Protecting El Paso’s long-term water supply must remain the priority. This is good for both El Paso and Lower Valley District customers.

El Paso doesn’t wait for justice. We practice it. And our community has always stood up for working people and treated our neighbors with dignity. That is why it meant so much to introduce my friend and colleague, James Talarico, as he kicked off his Taking Back Texas Tour right here at home.

James has personal roots in El Paso. His grandparents lived here. He carries childhood memories from this community. Starting his tour here was not symbolic. It was intentional. Because El Paso is central to the future we are building.

Change doesn’t happen by accident. It happens when people organize, show up, and demand better. El Paso showed up on Saturday. And we are just getting started.

The Department of Homeland Security has acquired an industrial site in far East El Paso County that may be used to house people, yet serious questions remain about whether basic fire suppression and life-safety systems can function as required. Public records show DHS purchased an entire industrial block in an area where water pressure and infrastructure have struggled to keep pace with rapid warehouse development. Federal agencies should not be allowed to bypass local safety standards or gamble with human lives. Before any permits are issued or operations begin, DHS must demonstrate full compliance with fire and life-safety requirements.

A federal court has blocked Texas’s mid-decade congressional map after finding it was shaped by racial discrimination and likely unconstitutional. Texas must now return to the 2021 map for the upcoming elections. This decision protects representation for Hispanic and Black residents across the state and keeps discriminatory lines from taking effect in 2026.
