Many people ask, “Why do other countries use American Sign Language (ASL)?”
ASL spread beyond the United States through Deaf schools, Deaf missionaries, educators, churches, universities, and international organizations. Over many years, Deaf people learned ASL, taught others, and built Deaf communities in different parts of the world.
That does not mean these countries don’t have their own sign languages. Many do. ASL is simply one of the sign languages used by some Deaf communities alongside their local sign language.
