This past week, I served as a Facilitator and Pod Co-Leader for the NYTD In-Person Event 2026 and participated in the recording of Lessons Learned: Voices from NYTD Experts, which will be posted on the federal government’s website and YouTube channel in the coming weeks.

I have contributed to this national work since May 2018 and appreciate the continued collaboration, guidance, and support of the Child Welfare Compliance Reviews Team and the Children’s Bureau (CB) at the U.S. Administration for Children and Families (ACF).

I would like to acknowledge the CWCRT staff—Brooke, Hung, Brittany, Tina, and Lupe—for their coordination and efforts to ensure participants had the tools, resources, and preparation necessary to support this work.

I also appreciate the collaboration with colleagues at the ACF/CB, including Tammy White, Kathryn Kulbicki, and Catherine Heath.

In this episode, Leroy shares his journey from aging out of the foster care system to becoming the first in his family to attend college. With limited family support and ongoing mental health challenges, he faced instability, grief, and the fear of having nowhere to call home. Through it all, one mentor—a former principal who became like family—remained a constant source of guidance, advocacy, and care. Her steadfast presence helped Leroy navigate life’s challenges and proved that even a single, lasting connection can transform the trajectory of a young person’s life.
