Fire Danger has elevated to Very High for a good portion of WI. With the winds today, it would be a good idea to postpone any burning until conditions are more favorable.

Tomorrow morning, Wednesday, April 29, 2026, local emergency services will conduct a simulated drunk driving crash scene at Altoona High School. This exercise serves as a powerful educational tool for our high school students and will highlight the dangers of impaired driving.

The simulation will involve the participation of the Altoona Police Department, Altoona Fire Department, Altoona EMS, and other community partners.

During the exercise, residents may see and hear a significant presence of emergency vehicles, sirens, and personnel responding to the staged scene behind the high school, near the front of the high school building.

Please do not be concerned. This is a controlled simulation and NOT a real emergency.

We are providing this advance notification to prevent any public alarm. We appreciate your understanding as we work to keep our community safe and informed.

A tornado watch has been issued for parts of Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin until 10 PM CDT. Storms are still possible to the north of the Watch area, though confidence in intensity is too low to include at this time. Expansions of the Watch will be leveraged if the storm threat expands north. Stay Weather Aware this evening and have multiple ways to receive alerts, including at weather.gov/twincities

Thank you to men and women of the Eau Claire Communications Center for the work you do. We appreciate all you do.

Congratulations to Chief Renderman! We are very lucky to have a chief that shows the dedication to making sure the departments members and the city of Altoona's needs are looked after. Chief Renderman also shows dedication to the students by the education he provides to students that he teaches at CVTC, they come out of classes knowing far more than when they went in and that is because of the knowledge Chief Renderman can share from all of his years of service and dedication to the Fire and EMS services.
