🌲 Exciting Job Opportunity in Gila National Forest 🌲
From Ashley Applethingy-Silfies -- Please message me directly with your first and last name, email address and phone number. I can provide more info and will pass along your info to manager. Self suffiency is a huge part of the job so carefully read the text below before asking questions and google about fire lookouts if you have basic questions.

I have a unique paid job opportunity for you at Eagle Peak Fire lookout tower in the Gila National Forest's Reserve Ranger District in New Mexico. We are looking for someone willing to take on a wildland fire lookout role, and training will be provided. The position involves living in the tower, driving up (4wd required), and it's an emergency hire with no formal application process. This is an excellent chance for those who missed applying for the season to get involved. Pay is 14-20$ per hour depending on experience + opportunity for lots of overtime.

The job starts around May and concludes around August. Per diem possibly an option for food but not guaranteed, a vehicle is not provided and you must provide your own 4wd. No previous fire experience or specific education is required, aside from a high school diploma. The tower is open to individuals with children, but they must reside in the tower. Keep in mind that it's a small, off-grid space with semi reliable solar electric power and a propane fridge. Pets are allowed, but don’t push the boundary on type or quantity (no stock animals or many large dogs for example). I personally have 2 cats They must be clean, vaccinated and not damage historic structures.

This opportunity has arisen due to the unfortunate passing of the person who staffed the tower for 15+ years. In recent times, they've had individuals stay for 1-2 years, and the need for a dedicated person is urgent. Don't miss out on this chance to contribute to the Gila National Forest community!

When thinking about amazing , Rose Vaughn definitely comes to mind!

Mrs. Rose Vaughn was a fire lookout in Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks, recognized many times for her work. According to a July 1945 Fresno Bee article, "Sequoia National Park….Assistant Park Superintendent Ford Spigelmyre said: 'Recently during one of the frequent lightning storms that sizzle the higher elevations at this time of the year, Mrs. Vaughn clearly demonstrated a frail woman of 100 pounds can handle a man sized job when the occasion arises.

'During a severe storm, lightning struck 150 yards from her station, setting fire to a mass of logs and debris, threatening a serious spread of fire had it not been for Mrs. Vaughn's stout heart and courage. With lightning striking all around her station and the nearest neighbor 11 miles away, she grabbed a shovel and went to work, stopping only occasionally to run to the tower to look for other strikes. When help arrived she had been able to report three additional fires and had brought her own under control.'
