There's a reason why Republicans relentlessly attack any and all education. An educated person is far more likely to employ critical thinking and reject their anti-empathy propaganda. When people learn humanity's history, they're less likely to ignore the patterns of it repeating!

Destroying the Dept. of Education will NOT change your kids' curriculum, improve learning outcomes, or put money back in your pocket. States and local school districts are already in charge of public education. This order is nothing but a scheme to disrupt public education so it's easier to privatize and enrich the President's billionaire buddies.

Founded in 1980, the primarily funds student financial aid and K-12 programs. In 2024, the ED received 4% of all federal funding — $268.35B — making it the 6th highest-funded federal agency. It’s also the smallest of any cabinet-level department with 4,100 full-time employees in 2023.

Most ED funds go toward student financial aid ($160.69B), with two main programs supporting college students: Pell Grants and the federal student loan program.

Elementary and secondary education are mostly funded by local governments, while state governments support higher education. In 2022, the government budgeted $96.2 billion for elementary and secondary education. 46.4% of that came from the ED.

School districts in Mississippi, South Dakota, and Arkansas leaned the most on federal funding. But if we’re talking dollars per student, Alaska, Washington DC, and North Dakota took the top spots.

Today, we’re remembering Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. during a time that feels a lot like the USA of the 1960s in its uncertainty and fear. Dr. King’s work was focused around anti-racism and anti-poverty, and this year we saw both a renewed uprising for black lives and the COVID-19 pandemic causing the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression. Add to that the political violence happening right now, and we have many reasons to be anxious about what this new year will bring.

To the residents of East Moline, I know you are hurting, just like hundreds of millions of us are hurting all across the country. And Dr. King’s life gives us a blueprint for how we can overcome the challenges facing all of us.

Right now, we have to protect our neighbors from the imminent threats of evictions, utility disconnections, and the additional hardships of homelessness and hunger that those threats might bring if we don’t act.

We have to continue to fight for racial justice by ensuring that our city resources are used in the way that most helps people rather than targeting those who are already hurting.

And we have to make sure that when we build back from the pandemic in a way that ensures that everyone, including workers and small businesses, benefits from our economy, not just the wealthy few. This will be our biggest challenge because it will face the most resistance - remember, Dr. King was assassinated during his Poor People’s Campaign.

2020 was a year that showed the cracks in our society in a way we haven’t seen since Dr. King’s time. So many of those cracks were issues that we never really dealt with properly after his assassination, and have only deepened since. Let’s take today as a moment of reflection on the previous year, and decide how we will make sure that we build a future worthy of Dr. King’s legacy.
