I have had the opportunity to hear more of the concerns of the community, and have witnessed the strong desire to work together. I hold every moment, every conversation, and every experience sacred. Most importantly i have learned of the need to find solutions that uplift all people.

As my 2024 Campaign for County Commissioner draws to a close, and voting is upon us, I can’t help but reflect on everything and everyone who has supported this campaign and my vision for Durham.

I could not have sustained over these last 3 months without God’s strength and my family’s support. “God’s got it!” has been my mantra. And, my family has held it ALLLLL the way down.

My dad traveled from Fayetteville every weekend to meet and greet at the polls.

My in-laws beamed with joy at church as I shared my why. They shared their social capital. They also did several meet and greets at the polls.

My sister and brother in loves canvassed, kept the kids, and donated.

My siblings donated and sent me jokes to make me smile.

My nephew drove from Ohio to do meet and greets all week.

My first cousin held down a poll.

My distant cousin whom I just met last month held down a campaign poll.

I heard from several relatives who spoke into my life and gave me encouragement and prayer.

My 14 year old even offered me $200 when he overheard me on a campaign call to raise funds to help get to the finish line.

I am beyond grateful.

Jovonia joined the Urban Community AgriNomics (UCAN) Black History Month Celebration at Catawba Trail Farm, where ‘Black History is more than a month-long event; it’s a daily recognition of the rich African American heritage woven into our land.’ It was a joyous occasion filled with dancing alongside TAVE (the ancestors voices ensemble) and connecting with community members as they celebrated Black History at Catawba Trail Farm!

“Black history is American history. Beyond February, the ongoing contributions and resilience of the Black community is continuous! Enjoying this celebration with the beauty of nature all around me, replenishes my soul and I am thank for the vision at UCAN,” - Jovonia Lewis.

"Public service and sisterhood, are for what our founders stood”, began Jovonia Lewis as she was afforded the opportunity to participate in the Durham Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and the National Pan-Hellenic Council, Inc. (NPHC) candidate forum. Amongst her Sorority sisters and other Greek lettered organization members and the community, Jovonia was able to share her background in service, sisterhood, and vision for Durham future.

Recently, Adrienne and Delvin Davis graciously hosted a Meet & Greet in support of Jovonia at their home. The dedicated support from the Davis family, with Adrienne serving as the campaign manager and Delvin as the campaign treasurer, has been extraordinary. It was a delightful evening filled with meaningful connections and open conversations. Residents felt comfortable sharing their concerns and Jovonia passionately addressed each one.

As we work towards a brighter future for Durham, strong community connections are something Jovonia and her team appreciate and value tremendously.
