The Griffith Homestead Garden and Greenhouse

The Griffith Homestead Garden and Greenhouse Welcome! A greenhouse was added in Nov. '21 to propagate veggie, native & tropical plants,. Soon to be planted: Corn, zucchini, pumpkins, beans & cantaloupe.

The Griffith Homestead was founded in April 2013, after Dave & Jennifer Griffith (US Army veterans) bought this small slice of country (.5 acre) in Durham, NC. Our dream has always been to have a piece of land small enough to manage, yet large enough to have a serious garden. The Griffith Homestead, though, is even more: Thanks to the pond & nearby woods, we're also a wildlife habitat. Several bir

d feeders also help attract numerous bird species, & our bluebird box took less than a week to attract occupants. We're currently starting our inaugural garden, which will be pesticide-free; the goal is to ultimately be certified organic. We've already planted tomatoes, sweet peppers, cucumbers, eggplant & watermelon. This is in addition to the existing fruits & vegetable planted by the property's previous owner: Muscadine grapes, strawberries & asparagus. As various crops are available for sale, we'll update our page. Plans for the future include fig & other fruit trees, as well as a chicken coop to provide fresh eggs.

First cut of the year in what I call the meadow area. I couldn't believe how many tiny trees were popping up through there; if I'd left it alone, it would have been a forest! Here's where I first started cutting, which was actually the shortest growth, and then the "after" photo.

Just finish transplanting the rest of the Jimmy Nardello pepper plants! Soon I'll have to be transplanting the tomato plants again; they're fast outgrowing the pots that they are in now! And yes, the photos are very slightly altered because I edited out some plants that were next to these, so you could see these plants more easily.

I know it's been a very long time since I last posted here, but there really hasn't been much to report - until now. I've been busy in the greenhouse, transplanting lots of seedlings from their starter pots to pots a couple sizes up. There are going to be plenty of Jimmy Nardello pepper plants available this year, as well as a better selection of herbs, and of course the always reliable Cherokee Purple and Black Cherry tomatoes. When they're big enough to start going to new homes, I'll be posting them on Marketplace and Nextdoor.

Some flowers starting to bloom and some flowers starting to fade. The flower bed in front of my bedroom window has filled in nicely, with the Arizona milkw**d in pretty much full bloom as the blue columbine is near the end of its season. The larger flower bed is starting to fill in, with the native columbine still in bloom and the blue salvia starting to show off. Some parts of it still look a little scraggly, but it still looks far better than it did when the bushes were there. Meanwhile, the foxgloves are blooming and the butterfly w**d is preparing to bloom in the bed next to the driveway and sidewalk.

Tomato, herb, pomegranate, and native plants are now available for sale! I just finished posting my ad on Marketplace, and as soon as the automatic review is done I'll share the link here. The Jimmy Nardello sweet peppers are not ready for sale yet; they're still a little small and will probably not be available for a couple weeks. I do have several native plants that are available for free, and they are posted in the ad as well.

Almost a month after starting the pepper seeds, the first one has sprouted! The basil seeds, which first started a couple weeks later, have also been sprouting nicely. Still no tomato seedlings, but i'm sure they're not far behind.

Well, I'm a few weeks later than usual, but I finally got my Jimmy Nardello pepper seeds started! They're fresh seeds, ordered from Sow True Seed in Asheville, so the germination rate should be excellent. BTW, I highly recommend this company for seeds and plants. They carry a great selection of heirloom veggie seeds!
