Chávez Background

Emily has lived in Durham for nearly 18 years and has been an education practitioner for over 15 years. She currently works as the Project Director for DREAM, a UNC-Chapel Hill School of Education program created in partnership with DPS to recruit and retain teachers of color and those from underrepresented backgrounds for DPS. Over the course of her career Emily has been an adv

Emily has taught and advised middle school, high school, and undergraduate students as well as led professional development on Latin American and Caribbean Studies for teachers around the state of North Carolina. She is the co-editor, along with Dr. Kia Caldwell, of Engaging the African Diaspora in K-12 Education (Peter Lang Publishing, 2020). In addition to these roles, Emily has served on a number of committees and boards, including Safe Schools NC from 2017-2019, which provides resources to educators to better address the needs of LGBTQ youth and which serves many DPS educators each year. Emily also served as a member of and co-chaired the Durham Public Schools Budget Process Advisory Committee in 2016-2018, which sought to align budgetary decisions with district priorities, including racial equity. Throughout her career Emily has held positions that allowed her to directly address social inequities, increase culturally responsive practices, and promote social justice in schools and in the field of education, affecting the lives of many students, families, and educators. Outside of her work, Emily enjoys writing, running, and spending time with family and friends. She has a passion for entertaining and facilitating connection. Emily also enjoys exploring new trails and parks in the Triangle area and beyond. With over 15 years of experience in the field of education, Emily is ready to take on the role of school board member, utilizing what she has learned as a teacher, professional development facilitator, education administrator, and organizational change agent. Emily is a bridge-builder who consistently keeps in mind the experiences, needs, and voices of people, especially those most systematically marginalized, while strategically and collaboratively moving in the direction of our mission and shared vision.

Last week I attended LatinxEd’s Latiné Education Summit. At a time when our communities are being increasingly surveilled, attacked, and racially profiled, the work we do to serve and lead right now is critical. Thank you for making space for collaboration, representation and visionary education work.

It has been my joy to read to Club Boulevard Elementary School scholars for Hispanic Heritage Month for three of the past four years. The scholars always have thoughtful comments about the books and fun questions for me. And there are so many amazing books with Latiné characters and stories! Thanks to Media Coordinator Elizabeth Husketh, the teachers, and the awesome kiddos at Club Boulevard for inviting me to celebrate our beautiful, powerful, and resilient Hispanic community with you each year. 🤎

Spring/summer updates continued!

~ I attended the LEE (Leadership for Educational Equity) Courageous Leadership Conference in Austin, TX, with fellow board member Jessica Carda-Auten, where we had the opportunity to dialogue with school board members and other educational leaders from all over the country!

~ In April I enjoyed an evening out on the block with community organizer/ leader/ curator of Black studies education Paul Scott, where I had the chance to meet kids, parents and community members and learn about their experiences and concerns regarding DPS schools. 📚

~ In March, I was grateful to be honored at the 22nd Annual Women’s Forum hosted by the City of Durham’s Human Relations Division Neighborhood Services for my work on the school board 🙏🏽

~ Also in March, I attended the Let’s Talk Racism Conference hosted by we are (working to extend anti-racist education). It was great to be in space with so many thoughtful and creative individuals working to dismantle racist and oppressive systems at multiple levels. Shout out to all the presenters from Durham, including Lakewood Elementary media coordinator Turquoise Parker!

I wish a restorative and enjoyable summer for all of our scholars, families and staff!

As always, it’s been a busy season on the DPS board. Here are some spring & summer highlights of the work I have been doing, along with my colleagues. ☀️

Starting with yesterday and working backwards…

~ Our board had our third retreat of the school year yesterday, where we discussed a board self-evaluation (facilitated by NCSBA) and received updates on our strategic plan and Growing Together (missing Natalie in this photo, but all of us were there). 📊

~ A week of advocacy in mid-June for Governor Stein to veto anti-immigration bills SB 153 and HB 318, which he did. Our entire board, along with Durham’s entire City Council and Board of County Commissioners, signed onto a press release communicating that we stood with our community in opposing these bills.

~ Graduations! We love seeing our scholars cross the finish line! Here is a moment from Hillside’s graduation and board members back stage. 🎓

~ On May 22, the DPS board passed a historic meet and confer policy (revised following the policy’s original passage on April 10), which will create a structure for DPS administration and qualifying employee representative organizations to collaborate on key recommendations to be made to the board regarding budget, compensation, working conditions, and other matters. More robust input via democratic processes = better outcomes! 📝

~ In May I attended the 2025 Torchlight Residency Art Exhibition‘s Private Reception for Artists, Families, and School Staff, a project of , featuring DPS scholar artists! It was awesome to see the body of creative work each artist showcased—they even got a chance to sell some of their pieces. Superintendent Dr. Lewis and I are here with two of the young scholar artists. 🎨

~ The DPS Safe Minds, Safe Schools Summit, held at Hillside High School on May 6, featured an insightful student panel. Scholars from around the district gave us their thoughts on how we could prioritize students’ emotional and physical wellbeing. 🗣️

Today I congratulate , our next governor, and , our next state superintendent, both accomplished champions for public education. And I want to express my gratitude to the people of North Carolina for choosing these leaders.

For our country and the world, many of us are mourning today, hearts heavy and questions spinning in our minds.

What I will say is this: every good thing we do matters. Every effort, every word we speak toward a righteous future, every act of healing and positive creation—it all matters. So we will take our time to mourn, pause, analyze, rest—whatever we need to do. And then, knowing that justice is worth fighting for, we will continue to do just that. May we never stop living with a vision of possibilities for our children and communities—and by “our children”, I mean all children, this whole world over.
