Letter to the editor The Sun News

Sokhary Chau endorsement for 18th Middlesex

“Over 35 years ago Sokhary Chau was a student of mine at the Bartlett Middle School. In class, Sokhary sat quietly and focused intently on each day’s lesson. After I completed my instructions, he concentrated on completing assignments and didn’t get distracted by those around him.

I was also Sokhary’s middle school basketball coach. In practices and during games Sokhary’s behavior was exemplary. He respected his teammates, opponents, faculty members and the referees. In return, he was held in high regard by everyone.

His academic efforts paid off. After graduating from the Bartlett School, he got accepted to Phillips Academy in Andover where he is now an alumnus.

While canvasing neighborhoods with Sokhary, I learned he still gives his undivided attention to whomever he speaks with. He sincerely wants to learn about his constituents’ concerns and cogently responds to questions they ask of him. In a side note, I’m often amazed at how long Sokhary is willing to spend listening to each voter.

During our walks, I also learned a lot about Sokhary’s character. He came to America from Cambodia where his father was killed by the Khmer Rouge. Fortunately, he and his family escaped and eventually migrated to America. He’s extremely grateful to America and the City of Lowell for the opportunities they have given him. On a number of occasions, he has revealed his feelings about how much he loves this City and our great Country. He truly wants to help the citizens of Lowell and is determined to help make our City a great place to live.

Even though he is an immigrant, he doesn’t favor endless government handouts. He believes one must have a strong work ethic to get ahead. Twenty years ago, he and his wife Somong demonstrated this belief by running a mortgage company in downtown Lowell. This experience taught him about value of home ownership and the difficulties business owners face. While talking to voters I often overheard Sokhary mention about the need to help business owners.

Above all, Sokhary values the will of the people and honesty in government. He recently received the endorsement of State Auditor Diana DiZoglio who has been working tirelessly to audit the State’s legislature’s finances. A 2024 ballot question, voted on by Massachusetts voters, passed by 72%. Sokhary fiercely believes a complete audit should be taken. Unfortunately, politicians keep putting up roadblocks for a thorough audit. If he gets elected, he promises to make this issue a priority.”

I came to Lowell as a young refugee, grew up in the Acre, built a life here, raised my family here, and eventually had the incredible privilege of serving as Mayor.

Those experiences shaped the leader I am today.

I believe our community deserves 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐲 — leaders who are honest, accessible, and accountable. It deserves 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 that brings people together, takes action, and delivers results. And it deserves 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲 — doing what's right and putting the people we represent first.

Now, I'm ready to take that experience to Beacon Hill.

As your State Representative, I'll fight to bring 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐜𝐞𝐬, 𝐟𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐨𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐛𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝟏𝟖𝐭𝐡 𝐌𝐢𝐝𝐝𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐱 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐭 — investments that strengthen our neighborhoods, support our families and small businesses, and create opportunities for the people who call Lowell home.

Lowell gave my family an opportunity to build a better future. I'm ready to fight for yours.

𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐢𝐬𝐧'𝐭 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐰𝐞 𝐬𝐚𝐲 𝐝𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚 𝐜𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐢𝐠𝐧.

It's about what we do after Election Day.

I believe accountability isn't something to fear.

It's something to embrace.

When government is transparent...people have confidence.

When people have confidence...democracy is stronger.

I'll always support meaningful transparency because earning the public's trust should never stop after the election.

Sixto and I have known each other nearly 20 years, and we have one ask: vote.
I grew up in the Acre. That is where I got my start. From the Bartlett to Mayor of this city.
Leadership is about people and neighborhoods, and working with everyone across communities, not just your own circle.
Early voting is open all week. I am asking for your vote for State Representative in the 18th Middlesex, and I would be honored to earn it.
Early Aug. 22-28 Sept.1st.

During my time as Mayor of Lowell, the City Council and I worked together to invest in our neighborhoods, strengthen our local economy, improve infrastructure, expand housing opportunities, and to continue building a city that works for everyone.

Here are just a few highlights:

🏗️ 𝐒𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐁𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐬 & 𝐄𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐜 𝐆𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐭𝐡

✅ Welcomed 80 new businesses to Lowell.
Invested in local entrepreneurs through grants, storefront improvements, and business retention programs.
✅ Launched Project Pop-Up: Lowell, turning vacant storefronts into opportunities for small businesses.
✅ More than $90 million in development projects continued to move the city forward.

🏠 𝐇𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 & 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲

✅ Funding supported new affordable housing and first-time homebuyers.
✅ Lowell Forward engaged residents to help shape the city's future through community-driven planning.

🚧 𝐈𝐧𝐟𝐫𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐈𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬

✅ 100+ ADA ramps, miles of roadway improvements, and major bridge projects advanced across the city.
✅ Millions invested in roads, bridges, sidewalks, and transportation improvements.

I am running for State Representative of the 18th Middlesex District and would appreciate your 𝐯𝐨𝐭𝐞 𝐨𝐧 𝐒𝐞𝐩𝐭. 𝟏𝐬𝐭.

Lowell's success is driven by the people who call this city home. Together, we moved Lowell forward. As your State Representative for the 18th Middlesex District, we can do even more for an even stronger Lowell for the future.

𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐲 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝𝐧'𝐭 𝐝𝐞𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐝 𝐨𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐩𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐲.

Whether you're a Democrat...

Republican...

Independent...

or don't follow politics at all...

We should all agree on one thing:

Government should be accountable to the people.

Independent audits aren't about scoring political points.

They're about building public confidence.

I support transparency because accountability makes our government stronger—not weaker.
