The American Nurses Association\California is mourning the loss of Alex Jeffrey Pretti, a 37-year-old nurse and U.S. citizen who was shot and killed today in Minneapolis.

Up until his last moment, he was still a nurse. He was a man dedicated to the service of others, yet he was met with senseless violence.

Our heart hurts. This is a devastating day for our entire profession.
We stand with Alex’s family and our fellow nurses in Minneapolis. We honor Alex’s life and his commitment to care, and we demand accountability for this tragedy.

ANA\California is closely following the situation in Minnesota, where federal agents (ICE and CBP) have essentially occupied the city. And we stand with our colleagues at MINNESOTA ORGANIZATION OF REGISTERED NURSES (MNORN)! Beyond the tragic loss of our colleague, Alex Pretti, thousands of residents are currently living in fear and under extreme surveillance.

This is unacceptable. We are a profession of advocacy. Right now, the best way to help is to support the organizations already on the ground providing food, legal aid, and protection to the community.

We recommend visiting the link below. It is a vital resource for supporting the local movement and protecting the human rights of everyone in Minnesota.

Academic Achievement Must Be Recognized.

ANA\C proudly affirms that the title 'Dr.' is a modifier that signifies the level of academic education and not a job description.

For our advanced practice nurses who have earned their doctorates—whether DNP or PhD—this title represents years of rigorous study, clinical expertise, and a commitment to advancing the profession. We stand firm in supporting the professional recognition they've earned.

The nurses’ associations of Washington, Hawai’i, Oregon, and California are united in their support of the West Coast Health Alliance. Health care recommendations must be grounded in science, not partisan ideology.

Nurses are ready to work with our state leaders to protect patients from the erosion of public trust in our federal health agencies.
