CHANNEL UPDATE:

Today I completed publishing the final videos necessary for me to claim 100% video coverage of the Interstate Highway System on the 'roadwaywiz' YouTube channel. This accomplishment has been 16 years in the making and represents the creation of the first-ever online database where any given segment of the entirety of the 48,000+ mile Interstate System can be viewed from one location.

These final videos mentioned above are currently available to paid channel members and will be completely available to the public by March 24. Those videos are still a work-in-progress from a presentation standpoint, as they lack thumbnails and descriptions. These shortcomings are temporary and will be updated prior to them going public in the days/weeks ahead.

While today's milestone is very gratifying and represents a monumental achievement in the history of road fandom and YouTube, the job is far from over. Additional Full-Length Interstate videos (for both primary and auxiliary routes nationwide) will be added in the months ahead so that the entire Interstate System will be available through those portals as well. As of now, the system can be viewed in a few different formats, however I plan on making everything more uniform and easier to browse in the future. I look forward to continuing to curate the nationwide collection of video footage and continuing to make it more accessible to an ever-growing audience!

Speaking of I-42, let's take a look at what's becoming one of the largest interchange complexes in the Tar Heel State, where Interstates 40 and 42 meet the NC 540 Triangle Expressway about 10 miles southeast of downtown Raleigh. Not so long ago, this was a non-descript section of relatively rural interstate along I-40. Nowadays, it serves as a vital suburban crossroads between three major highways.

While I-40 proceeds southeasterly toward Benson and Wilmington, I-42 now heads east from here toward Goldsboro and the Atlantic coast while NC 540 serves the southern arc of suburbs south of Raleigh. NC 540 is also currently being extended northward in the final phase of the Raleigh Beltway project; the final connection back to I-540/I-87 near Knightdale is planned for completion in 2028, creating a continuous outer loop (parts interstate, parts tollway) encircling North Carolina's capital city.

One of North Carolina's newest interstate highways is I-42, which is intended to run east-west to connect Raleigh with New Bern and Morehead City via the US 70 corridor. I-42 was first signed along the Clayton and Goldsboro Bypasses in 2024, with the entirety of the route planned for construction well into the 2030s.

The most recent addition to the future I-42 corridor is the Havelock Bypass, an eight mile interstate-standard freeway that reroutes US 70 traffic to the west of the town of Havelock between New Bern and Morehead City. The bypass opened to traffic in December 2025 at a cost of $323 million (per NCDOT) and is a fairly non-descript, rural section of highway with one intermediate interchange between its two termini at the former US 70 (now signed as a business route).

It's mindboggling to think that today is the first day of my life without any outstanding mileage of the Interstate Highway System left to cover. On my way to the airport, I revisited some classic Raleigh urban drives - the updated footage will be used for future full-length interstate videos. Certainly one for I-40 is in the works. I'm debating whether I'll give the same treatment to auxiliary interstates on the channel, but there's a compelling case in favor of doing so.

Pictured is the westbound/outer loop drive on the 440 Beltline. Very cool to see the widening project near completion with all lanes open between 40 and Wade - that's been a long time coming and that extra lane makes a huge difference.

At about 1:45 PM ET this afternoon (Sunday, 2/8/26), I reached the eastern terminus of Interstate 587 in Greenville, NC. This was the final endpoint in my years-long journey to cover every mile of the Interstate Highway System and to be the first YouTuber to have every mile logged in video form.

I'm extremely grateful for the opportunities I've had over the last 16 years that made today's achievement possible. It never would have happened without a lucrative and stable career, good health (with me and elsewhere), and a little bit of luck from the weather and traffic Gods from time to time along the way. I'm also grateful to be able to share my love of travel and America's great highways and cities with people all over the country and world through the outlets of YouTube and social media. I love doing what I do and get a lot of additional enjoyment out of knowing that others out there find my work worthwhile.

As for the future, there's still one more day left in this trip. Beyond that, lots of work ahead to ensure I can upload the remaining Interstate miles to the channel ASAP. I hope to have more elaborate and expansive thoughts on today and what it means to me personally and moving forward, but for now I'll simply say the same thing I've told people for the last 16 years. Thanks for watching! (And screw the Patriots! 🤡)

On Day 3 (2/7/26) of what's become known as the "Interstate Golden Spike" trip, the final interstate mileage in South Carolina was completed (courtesy of I-20 between Florence and Columbia) and a side trip to Myrtle Beach added yet another major American city to the video library. The Palmetto State is the 49th state to reach 100% interstate system completion.

That leaves just North Carolina with uncovered mileage. After today's visit to the new southern extension of I-295 near Fayetteville, only I-42 and I-587 stand between this YouTube channel and a fully complete Interstate System catalog. Tomorrow is sure to be a historic and significant day as those final miles are covered.

Here in the Carolinas, there are little "bits" of Interstate here and there that need coverage in order for me to close the final gaps in my channel's coverage of the nationwide Interstate System. A good example of this was the Rockingham Bypass, the newest segment of I-73/74 in NC. Opened in 2025, it connects the east-west US 74 corridor with the north-south I-73/74/US 220 corridor and was added to my channel's video library this week.

I've been incredibly busy and preoccupied these last few days, to the point where I neglected to mention the start of Road Trip #3 this winter! As I write this, I'm through two days out of five total and am based in the Carolinas through this weekend. I am officially on Interstate System Clinch-Watch, as this trip will give me the final 0.7% of system mileage necessary for me to claim that I've driven every mile of America's Interstate Highway System, a feat that has been 16 years in the making.

Yesterday, Day 1 saw the completion of Virginia's final interstate mileage (courtesy of I-85 between Durham and Petersburg), bringing the number of states at 100% completion to 48. Only the two Carolinas remain. That's what the next two days are for.

The recently-completed Broadway Curve widening project on I-10 east of downtown Phoenix is on display here. Completed in 2025, the $833 million project added lanes and dedicated HOV connections along the mainline of I-10 between the I-17 split and the Loop 202/South Mountain interchange in Chandler. Between US 60 and I-17, the freeway sports upwards of 16 lanes, making it among the widest freeways in America.

Recent developments along Interstate 17 north of Phoenix have led to increased freeway capacity and more reliable/consistent travel times for drivers between The Valley and the mountains. Between Anthem and Sunset Point, 23 miles of improvements include a 3rd lane for travel through Anthem and Black Canyon City. The focal point of this project is the reversible "flex lanes", a pair of lanes built along an 8 mile stretch of the widened southbound roadway (along the grade between Black Canyon City and Sunset Point) that are separated from the southbound mainline by concrete barrier. The lanes are typically open northbound Monday-Saturday and point southbound on Sundays. There is no toll charged to use the lanes and they are open to all vehicles regardless of day or direction.

The $522 million widening program along I-17 began construction in 2022 and was completed in the fall of 2025. (Photos from January 2026)

Interstate 11 is one of the newest interstate corridors in America. It's currently confined to Clark County, Nevada and this is likely to remain the case for the foreseeable future. The current extent of the interstate runs from the NV/AZ border at the Mike O'Callaghan–Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge over the Colorado River (adjacent to Hoover Dam) to SR 157 in the northwestern reaches of greater Las Vegas. This current extent, totaling about 57 miles, was finalized with the extension of the I-11 designation along the US 95 and I-515 freeways between Henderson and North Las Vegas in 2024; the former I-515 designation along what is now I-11 has been deleted from the log and no longer exists.

Future plans call for I-11 to extend southerly into central Arizona along the US 93 corridor toward Phoenix and northerly into western Nevada along the US 95 corridor toward Reno. While select projects related to future interstate upgrades are either in construction or planned, progress on the corridor as a whole has been slow or non-existent outside of greater Las Vegas and that is expected to continue in the future.

Good to be back in Vegas for a couple days! An overhaul of the channel's content in Clark County was a part of this trip's to-do list, including an updated I-11 full-length video set and a full 4K video series. Mission accomplished.
