NCDPI’s Chief Information Officer Vanessa Wrenn returned to Granville Academy (Granville County Public Schools) last week to celebrate the Class of 2026!

As the school’s founding leader, Wrenn reflected on Granville Academy’s growth and the positive impact its innovative blended learning model continues to have on students across the district. She applauded the graduates for their perseverance, independence and accomplishments as they stepped into their next chapter.

Rowan-Salisbury Schools Superintendent Dr. Kelly Withers was recently named the inaugural recipient of the Transcend Trailblazer Award, presented by a national nonprofit supporting extraordinary learning in schools. The award recognizes leaders who elevate student voice and reimagine what’s possible in public education - https://transcendeducation.org/the-transcend-trailblazer-award/.

The Transcend Trailblazer Award honors district leaders who bring research, evidence, and the voices of educators, families, and young people together to reimagine what school can be and who have the courage to build it.

Congratulations to four North Carolina high school students for winning best actors and actresses as part of the DPAC Rising Star Awards for central North Carolina and the Blumey Awards for the greater Charlotte area.

Clinching best actor and actress for the DPAC Rising Star Awards are Gabriel Emery, Wake Forest High (Wake County Public School System) and Mollie Reeves, Cardinal Gibbon High, Raleigh.

Taking home best actor and actress for the Arts Center's Blumey awards are: Harold Garcia, North Lincoln High (Lincoln County Schools, NC) and Anna Jernigan, Carmel Christian High, Matthews.

The DPAC Rising Star and Blumey Awards celebrate outstanding achievement in high school musical theatre. The winners will now compete at the National High School Theatre Awards, also known as the Jimmy Awards, in New York City June 22.

Members of the Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council took their voices to the North Carolina General Assembly during Advocacy Day on May 19. The students kicked off the day with Superintendent Mo Green before visiting the legislative building to connect with their representatives and see the legislative process in action.

The group met with State Senators Val Applewhite and Ralph Hise, State Representatives Jimmy Dixon, Ray Pickett and Diane Wheatley and staff for Representative John Bell.

The day wrapped up at the House Education K-12 Committee, where students watched debate on key education bills and gained a firsthand look at how education policy shapes North Carolina schools.
