🎷 Detroit is about to turn Labor Day weekend into one giant jazz stage.

From September 4–7, the Detroit Jazz Festival takes over downtown Detroit with something that still feels a little unbelievable: 𝗶𝘁’𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗲𝗲.

Not “free if you get there before noon.” Not “free but only for one performance.” The Detroit Jazz Festival has been free since it began in 1980, and today it’s recognized as the world’s largest free jazz festival. More than 60 performances are packed into the four-day weekend, bringing together jazz legends, rising stars, Detroit musicians and artists from around the world.

And 2026 has a pretty interesting twist.

For the first time, the festival’s three downtown stages are being consolidated into Hart Plaza. That means you won’t be trekking between separate downtown festival footprints just to catch the next act. The organizers say the new setup is designed to make the festival easier to navigate while keeping the same number of stages and performances.

The lineup is no small thing, either.

This year’s festival features artists including Ron Carter, Bob James, Ravi Coltrane, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Kurt Elling & Yellowjackets, Take 6, Vijay Iyer Trio and 2026 Artist-in-Residence Joe Lovano. And that’s just scratching the surface.

Friday night kicks things off at 5:30 p.m., with performances continuing into the evening. Saturday and Sunday run from 12:30 p.m. until 11 p.m., while Monday wraps up by 8 p.m.

But here’s the part I love: you don’t have to be a jazz expert to enjoy this.

You can wander into Hart Plaza, hear something you've never heard before, grab some food, sit by the river and let the music decide where you spend the next hour. You might come for one artist and end up staying for three.

And Detroit has been doing this for more than four decades. The festival was founded in 1980 as part of an effort to bring people into the city and provide world-class entertainment, eventually growing into the massive Labor Day tradition it is today.
