Two hours at today's Committees Fair went quickly at the Morris County Vocational School. Stephanie and Don met so many nice visitors, all interested in learning more about what the Commission and its Green Team are doing.
Thank you, Denville Public Library, for hosting this event.

The Environmental Commission requests your participation in our Quiet Summer initiative. The goal is to foster peace and quiet in our yards, as well as a greater awareness of the health hazards associated with gas-powered leaf blowers. These issues impact both residents and landscapers.

We ask homeowners and landscapers to suspend the use of gas-powered leaf blowers from May until the end of September. This is when they are only used to blow grass clippings. (Electric leaf blowers, while not ideal, are considerably quieter and non-polluting, and are acceptable alternatives.)

Click here for a bilingual letter to share with your landscapers: https://files.constantcontact.com/32a35e6b701/4fe1bb78-b513-483e-a9c2-827dbd2e1468.pdf?rdr=true

While noise nuisance is what often sparks concerns about these machines, we have learned about the health impact of gas-powered leaf blowers through a growing body of scientific studies.

-Exposure to loud and/or persistent noise contributes to hearing loss, hypertension, ischemic heart disease, annoyance, sleep disturbance, and cognitive impairment.

-A leaf blower’s two-stroke engine emits up to one-third of its fuel un-burned, spewing toxic pollution containing carbon monoxide, nitrogen-oxides, and volatile organic compounds like benzene and formaldehyde.

-Fine carbon particulate matter created by gas-powered leaf blowers can linger in the air for days and is linked to asthma, lung disease, heart disease, and cancer.
