Now that we have successfully braved today’s afternoon showers and flood advisory, North Texas is rewarding us in true Texas fashion: with sweltering heat. 🥵

A Heat Advisory is in effect Saturday from noon to 9 PM, with heat index values expected to reach 100° to 105° in Denton County.

So before you head outside, especially for crowded events or afternoon plans:

☀️ Hydrate early and often
☀️ Take breaks in shade or A/C
☀️ Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing
☀️ Check on kids, pets, older adults, and neighbors
☀️ Know the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke

And because Texas weather likes to keep the plot moving, rain and storms return Sunday.

Stay cool, stay weather-aware, and don’t let the humidity win.

Heads up, Denton County. 🌧️

The National Weather Service is issuing a Flood Advisory for areas including Denton County as showers and storms linger over the area. These storms are producing heavy rainfall efficiently, meaning water can build up quickly, especially in low-lying or poor drainage areas.

Please use caution this afternoon: The flood advisory expires at 3:30PM

The rain is not exactly in a hurry to leave, so give yourself extra time and turn around, don’t drown.

Denton County weather is very on brand today.

We could see scattered storms this morning into the afternoon. “Scattered” means not everyone will get rain, but storms that do develop could bring frequent lightning and gusty downburst winds.

And because Texas likes to keep us on our toes, areas that miss the storms still have to deal with a hot and humid afternoon, with heat index values around 100-105°.

If you'll be be outside today just move indoors if you hear thunder and hydrate early!

🏆 We are honored to announce that the Denton County Office of Emergency Management has received a Regional Excellence Award from the North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG) Emergency Preparedness Planning Council (EPPC)!

This award recognizes our Training and Exercise Program as a regional asset that strengthens preparedness across North Texas, not just Denton County. Through initiatives such as the annual Regional Preparedness Summit, Incident Management Team training, and leadership of the MetroX Regional Family Assistance Center exercise, our team has worked alongside countless partners to build a more resilient and prepared region.

Emergency management is a team effort, and this recognition reflects the dedication of our elected officials, staff, first responders, public safety partners, volunteers, and neighboring jurisdictions who continuously collaborate to enhance readiness before disasters strike.

We are grateful to NCTCOG and EPPC for this recognition and remain committed to supporting preparedness, response, recovery, and resilience efforts throughout Denton County and the North Texas region.

When severe weather threatens Denton County, don't forget to include your pets in your emergency plans.

Before storms arrive:

Bring pets indoors early
Know where they will shelter during a tornado warning
Keep leashes, carriers, and pet supplies nearby
Make sure ID tags and microchip information are up to date
Never leave pets outside during severe weather

Tip: Practice moving your pets to your safe room so they're comfortable when an emergency occurs.

Basic pet kit essentials:

3–7 days of food and water
Medications
Leash/harness or carrier
Bowls
Waste supplies (bags/litter)
