We're 2,790 days into J B Pritzker's Administration and he has

Doubled the motor fuel tax from 19¢ to 38¢ and it now sits at .48¢ per gallon + 6.5% sales tax on top of that.

Raised cigarette taxes $1 per pack and added an additional 15% wholesale tax on all e-cigarettes and Vapes.

He increased the tax on video gambling slots to 33% and created a new progressive tax schedule for casinos and slot machines.

Imposed a 7% State sales tax on recreational ma*****na alongside a potency-based excise tax ranging from 10 to 25%

Imposed a new 6% tax on parking garages and a 9% tax on monthly and annual parking spaces.

He increased our vehicle registration fees from $50 to $150.

He imposed new licensing fees and income tax surcharges for sports wagering.

He expanded sales tax collection requirements on remote online marketplaces.

He replaced flat sports bedding taxes with new graduated scales ranging from 20 to 40% and then added a per wager fee on top of that.

Most recently, he implemented a progressive monthly user fee on large social media platforms based on their number of in-state users.

He created a 15% tax on fantasy sports operations and a new transaction tax on digital assets.

He applied a 6% hotel occupation on short-term rental properties.

Illinois is tied with New Jersey with the highest residential property taxes in the United States.

We have the 8th highest sales tax in the United States with the average combined state and local municipality sales tax at 8.98%.

He's raising our tolls again starting January 1st by an additional $0.45 per toll.

In the end, a typical Illinois family pays an effective combined tax rate of almost 17% of their annual income costing nearly $13,099 annually compared to the national median average of $8,672. This means Illinois residents pay roughly 52% more than the US average.

Meet the Candidate: State Senator Andrew Chesney - District 45

Did you know Boone County is represented by three Illinois State Senators?

Illinois legislative districts often cross county lines, which means residents of the same county may have different representatives in Springfield. It can sometimes be confusing to know who represents you, who to contact, and whose name you’ll see on your ballot.

Over the next few weeks, we’ll help introduce the elected officials and candidates who represent different parts of Boone County.

State Senator Andrew Chesney represents the 45th Senate District, including portions of northern Boone County in the Capron, Poplar Grove and Caledonia areas, along with communities throughout Northwest Illinois.

A lifelong Northwest Illinois resident and small-business owner, Chesney previously served on the Freeport City Council and represented the 89th House District before being elected to the Illinois Senate in 2022.

In Springfield, some of the issues Chesney has focused on include:

* Property tax relief and taxpayer protections
* Supporting law enforcement and first responders
* Protecting Second Amendment rights
* Local control and parental involvement in education
* Government accountability and spending
* Affordable and reliable energy

His legislative record reflects those priorities. For example, he has sponsored property-tax legislation, voter-ID legislation, government-efficiency measures and a package of bills aimed at increasing energy supply and protecting existing power generation.
