Ever wonder how your New Hampshire car registration fee is calculated?
It actually has two parts:
• State fee: Based on your vehicle’s weight class and plate type. For example, heavier vehicles or specialty plates have higher state fees.
• Town fee: Based on your vehicle’s original list price when it was new (MSRP) and its age. A brand new vehicle starts at the highest rate of 18 mills per thousand of value. That rate goes down every year for six years as the vehicle gets older, until it reaches 3 mills. In simple terms, the newer the vehicle, the higher the town portion will be. As the vehicle gets older, that portion goes down.
Every town and city in New Hampshire calculates registration fees the same way using the same state schedule. The only difference you may see is a small additional local fee in some communities for things like trash pickup or other local services.
You can also see this on your actual registration. On the right side, there is a box that breaks down the fees, including the mill rate used for the town portion.
