FROM THE WINY RADIO NEWSROOM: (KILLINGLY) In Killingly, a Referendum to address the 2026-27 Fiscal Year budget proposals is taking place today from 6 am to 8 pm.

The first question is whether to approve the general government proposal of $24,610,315. That’s an increase of $980,560 or 4.15% over the current fiscal year. That question is followed by an advisory question for those who vote “no,” indicating whether they felt the spending plan is too high or too low.

The next question is whether to approve the education proposal of $49,940,676. That’s an increase of $2,001,859 or 4.18% over the current fiscal year. That question is followed by the same advisory question for those who vote “no” on the education spending plan.

When Killingly Town Manager Brian Palaia came on the WINY Talk Show on Monday morning, we asked him what the impact to the local property tax rate would be if these budgets pass as currently proposed.

“When we went into Town Meeting our assumption for the mil rate impact was 0.98. At the last minute, the legislature approved some additional aid monies that would go both to the school and the town, and it is up to the Town Council to decide how they want to recognize those revenues. So we’re just approving an expense number,” Palaia explained. “Ultimately the additional money that comes in can offset that mil rate increase if the Council chooses to do that when they set the mil rate. It could be less than the 0.98, but the budget assumptions when we went into Town Meeting was 0.98, and then over that weekend, like literally two days before Town Meeting, we get the news about the new revenue.”

Districts 1, 3 and 5 are voting at the Killingly Public Schools Central Office Cafeteria located at 79 Westfield Avenue; and Districts 2 and 4 are voting at the Killingly High School located at 226 Putnam Pike.
