You can see the moon has a slight shadow on the right so the sun is not directly behind I think. Also the moon is really far from Earth so any slight angle to its orbit means it usually misses casting a shadow on Earth, and hence, the rareness of an eclipse…

James A. Parsons was a Dayton, Ohio native. He received his electrical engineering degree from Renesselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York and an honorary doctorate from Wilberforce University. From 1922 to 1953 Parsons was a metallurgist at Durion Company, Inc. in Dayton. During his time at Durion, Parsons was issued eight patents.
Parsons taught at Tennessee Agricultural and Industrial State University (Tennessee State University) and established the first metallurgy curriculum at a predominately African American Institution there. He also taught at The Oho State University and the Garfield Skill Center.
