National Avocado Day

The avocado is botanically a berry, technically a fruit, nutritionally closer to a nut than to most produce, and has been cultivated in Mesoamerica for at least 10,000 years — longer than wheat has been farmed in the Middle East. It survived the last Ice Age. It was a staple of Aztec civilization. Spanish conquistadors wrote home about it in the 16th century. And yet, for most of American culinary history, it was an exotic regional curiosity found primarily in California and among communities with Mexican roots, regarded by the mainstream grocery-buying public as either unfamiliar or unnecessarily indulgent. The transformation of the avocado from regional specialty to America's most talked-about food happened within a single generation, driven by one of the most successful agricultural marketing campaigns in history and a nutritional research reversal that rehabilitated dietary fat at exactly the right moment.

National Avocado Day on July 31st celebrates a fruit that has become simultaneously a culinary icon, a nutritional case study, a generational culture war flashpoint, and the subject of more social media content than any other single food. The avocado toast that a financial commentator infamously blamed for millennials' inability to afford homes generated more coverage than most actual economic policy. None of that changes how good a ripe avocado tastes, mashed with lime and salt and eaten with something crunchy. Ten thousand years of cultivation is its own argument. The avocado has been right the whole time.

💚 Sovereign Grove Project Update: Let’s Get Water to the Garden! 🌳Darshawn Romine
A great community garden starts from the ground up, but right now, our plots are facing a major test—we don't have a reliable water source.

Here is where we currently stand: we are actively raising funds to install a proper, permanent water spigot on-site. Without it, keeping our fresh produce growing and bringing neighbors together is an uphill battle. Thanks to those who have already pitched in, we are moving forward, but we still need help to reach our ultimate goal!

Please consider donating or sharing our story so we can finally get our garden the water it deserves:

💚 Growing Together at Sovereign Grove 🌳

A great garden starts from the ground up, but right now, our biggest hurdle is simply getting a reliable water source to our plots. Without it, keeping our plants alive and bringing neighbors together around fresh food is a real challenge.

We are currently raising funds to install a proper water spigot so our garden can finally flourish the way it's meant to. Every bit of support makes a massive difference for our green space.

Please consider donating or sharing this post to help us reach our goal!

Beating the July Heat in the Garden! ☀️🌻

Our plants at Sovereign’s Grove are working hard to grow, but with this July heat, they need a little extra help!

We’ve had an amazing 854 people view our fundraiser so far, and the support from friends and neighbors has been incredible. We are working hard to secure the final funds needed to install a proper water spigot at our 341 East Maplewood Ave location.

Having a reliable water source on-site is the difference between a thriving harvest and a struggle in the summer sun. If you can help us with a donation of any size—even just a few dollars—it goes directly toward the plumbing and installation costs to keep our garden healthy.

Help us reach our goal: https://gofund.me/c7cc2fd9d

Thank you for being part of this growth! Please share this post to help us get the word out!

The garden is growing, and so is our community support! 🌻

I’m so incredibly grateful to everyone who has already donated to help Sovereign’s Grove get the water we need. It’s amazing to see our neighborhood rally together!

We’ve had 854 people view our fundraiser so far, which shows just how much this space means to all of us. We are making steady progress toward our goal for the new water spigot, but we still need your help to cross the finish line.

Whether it’s a donation or simply sharing this post with your friends and family, every bit helps us ensure our garden at 341 East Maplewood Ave can keep feeding and nourishing our community all summer long.

Check out our progress and join in here: https://gofund.me/c7cc2fd9d
