Preserve David City's Beauty and History

Preserve David City's Beauty and History To preserve the beauty and history of David City, NE by raising awareness of issues threatening David City and by sharing photos and stories.

Our objective is to help preserve the beauty and history of David City by raising awareness of issues threatening David City's beauty and history and by sharing photos and stories to help others appreciate our town. Maintaining our original paved bricks downtown is one of the keys to preserving our beauty and history. A sales tax extension through the year 2030 is being proposed on the May 10, 201

6 ballot. If the measure passes, our original bricks will be eliminated in favor of stark, white concrete. We oppose the extension of sales tax. In order to provide time to form a coalition of citizens, business owners, and government officials to thoughtfully formulate a plan for downtown and to pursue grants that are available to let us keep our historic bricks.

The had better not demo the public high school. Demolition of the high school is one of the possibilities in the school long range facility plan.

A couple more downtown buildings are biting the dust. They were donated by Bone Creek Museum to the City of David City. The City is eligible for a grant that will take care of part of the destruction cost.

Apparently, the former Legion building was in poor shape and the building to the east needed it to be there to remain structurally sound. The city is planning make the vacated area into a green space.

Hello there,

There is a community outreach meeting on Tuesday, January 28 (which is tonight for most of you reading this) at 7 PM at the David City Public High School. It will be held in the commons area outside the high school gym. I don't have a detailed agenda, but I believe that it will cover the topic below.

The school will soon be paying off its newest addition, and leadership will be sharing its plans on how to continue to keep spending money on luxuries to build their dream campus.

The spirit of the law requires big projects like these to be funded by bonds that are approved or denied by votes of the people. However, there is a loophole that allows leadership to freeze you out of the process and avoid a vote. Below is my understanding of the situation from a reading of statute and conversations with state officials.

Did you know that school leadership has formed a non-profit corporation that takes on debt for major, multi-million-dollar projects and accepts lease payments from the school, which the school makes out of its general fund? The school's general fund is grown by taxing your property.

Once the non-profit pays off the debt, it donates the building asset to the school, and then takes on more debt to fund its next project.

This loophole freezes you out of having input on these major expenses.

The most recent long range facility plan is shown. It was created in years past, and I can only believe that costs have increased since it was originally prepared.

On the plan, you'll see millions of dollars of proposed spending for a theater, addition to the gym, locker rooms, wrestling rooms, a new competition gym, 20 new classrooms, and possible destruction of the historic high school.

If you believe that the tax and spend cycle needs to end, I urge you to attend the community outreach meeting and make your voice heard.

Sincerely,

David McPhillips

The situation is offensive but destroying the house is only a harsh, short-sighted fix for the problem - the equivalent of the old adage “cutting off your nose to spite your face.”

If no one can change the course of events, when the time deadline runs out, it will only be a matter of a few hours and all that will be left is a cloud of dust and a big sad hole in the ground. Every board, every piece of trim in that house was cut with a handsaw - it could all just be splinters.

Surely some better 11th hour solution can be found. I truly hope so. Please think of some way to save [rescue] this beauty for future generations to enjoy. Please.
