Constitution Square Historic Site

Constitution Square Historic Site This is the official page of Constitution Square Historic Site in Danville and Boyle County, Kentucky, the birthplace of Kentucky's statehood.

Constitution Square Historic Site is the original public square of Danville, Kentucky, where 10 state constitutional conventions were held from 1785 to the adoption of Kentucky's first state constitution prior to its admission to statehood on June 1, 1792. Constitution Square is now a public park that features replicas of several historic log structures from Danville's frontier era that are locate

d on their original sites. It also houses the original log structure of the first U.S. Post Office built west of the Allegheny Mountains, which was relocated from its original Walnut Street location to the park for its preservation and interpretation. The oldest original structure in the park, Grayson's Tavern, dates from 1785. The Tavern was a gathering place for Danville's and Kentucky's early political leaders during the early fight for Kentucky statehood. It now houses the Visitors Center for the park. Now owned by the Boyle County Fiscal Court, the county's governing body, Constitution Square is once again the vibrant center of commerce, activity, and community events in Danville and Boyle County. It is also serves as the office campus for the Danville-Boyle County Economic Development Partnership (EDP), including the Boyle County Industrial Foundation, Danville-Boyle County Chamber of Commerce, Danville-Boyle County Convention & Visitors Bureau, and Heart of Danville Main Street Program. The EDP and Partner office suites are located in Fisher's Row, Watts-Bell House, Grayson's Tavern, and Goldsmith House around the perimeter of the park. The EDP's Harold W. McKinney Conference Center is located in the Schoolhouse. The park's gift shop is located in the Goldsmith House at the northeast corner of Second and Walnut Streets. The gift shop is managed by the neighboring Ephraim McDowell House Museum & Apothecary.
