My heart is overflowing with love~alofa 🩵, gratitude 🥰, pride, deep respect and hope for the future🙏🏽.
Yesterday, our CA API Asian Pacific Islander Advocacy Coalition filled the State Capitol with the strength and spirit of over 200 community organizations standing together in collective purpose. Fifty teams stepped boldly into legislative offices carrying the voices, stories and realities of our communities, advocating for policies that uplift our people, protect our dignity, and dismantle barriers that have long impacted our families.
This movement was built through service, sacrifice, courage and the stewardship of committed community leaders and investors who believe our diverse communities deserved to be seen, heard and valued.
As we continue pushing forward priority legislation that strengthens the quality of life for our communities, we do so grounded in the beauty of our heritage, the preservation of our cultures and the responsibility to weave our representation into the spaces helping shape the future.
A huge Malo Fa’afetai to Isa Whelan, Executive Director and the incredible API Advocates - Sacramento, CA team, this year’s Coalition Steering Committee, sponsors and especially the prayers that covered yesterday’s convening with protection, wisdom and grace.
This work requires ALL HANDS IN. The season of standing by as spectators can no longer continue.
One of the greatest joys of the day was witnessing our youth fully immersed in leadership: interns serving throughout the Capitol, stepping confidently into rooms many once believed were unreachable and hearing legislators praise their brilliance, professionalism and passion. It stirred my soul deeply.
But what moved me to tears most profoundly was seeing our Pasefika representation rise boldly and unapologetically truly honoring the PI in AAPI.
Watching our young people lead conversations, take up space and sit across from decision makers including meeting with the first Pacific Islander State Assemblymember David J Tangipa felt sacred to witness. During my younger years, opportunities like this felt distant, foreign and unattainable.
Yesterday, I quietly stepped out of the room wiping tears from my eyes, smiling as I watched them take charge with excellence, confidence and cultural pride.
As I transition into elderhood alongside so many respected leaders present yesterday, we recognized something powerful: this is the moment we have always prayed and worked toward. The time has come to let them lead, to trust them at the helm and to surround them with guidance, love, wisdom and prayer.
THEY ARE READY ✊🏽 🔥‼️
Thank you for the opportunity to serve as Coalition Chair these past two years. I often felt undeserving and ill-equipped, yet I remained humbled and honored to represent our people in this role of service.
May we never stop dreaming for one another. May we never stop believing in the power of our collective voice, our cultural strength and our shared humanity.
Because when the people believe in themselves, the power of the people will always rise.
I will always stay in good trouble clearing paths and cultivating leadership for our communities “Keeping the door open and the ladder down to always lift our people UP ⬆️”
GOD’s Best 🙏🏽 Love & Blessings 💙
