Losing SNAP can now mean losing school meals, too.

A new NPR report explains how cuts to SNAP can reduce children’s automatic access to free breakfast and lunchand even put universal free meal programs at entire schools at risk.

For families, that could mean nearly $1,000 more per child every school year. For students, it can mean hunger, stigma and another barrier to learning. At Independence Gardens, we believe access to fresh, nutritious food is foundational - not optional.

That’s why we’re growing food in schools, teaching children to prepare it and advocating to Boost School Lunch to $5.

A hungry child cannot reach their full potential. It is time to build a stronger food system around every child.

Will a child actually want to eat it?
Chefs bring creativity to a conversation that too often focuses only on what's wrong.
We're asking: What's possible? What if chefs, school nutrition professionals, farmers, educators, businesses, parents and children worked together? What could school lunch become?
