The historic Joppee neighborhood of Dallas is tucked away near the banks of the Trinity River, and at the edge of the Great Trinity Forest in southeast Dallas. As one of the few remaining “Freedman” towns in the nation, the Joppee community is ripe with history. It is believed that the community’s name originates from a biblical reference and translates to “beautiful” or “the beginning” in Hebrew.

“Joppee,” has also been spelled: Joppa, Joppie and Joppy. Phonetically, since the 1800’s it has been Joppee and the community decided to maintain that spelling. The community was settled in the late 1860’s by freed slaves of the nearby Miller plantation, and is one of the three remaining Freedman communities in Texas. It is still considered one of the best preserved Freedman communities in the United States. Joppee hosted the first Juneteenth festivities in Dallas, celebrating the day the Emancipation Proclamation came into effect, June19,1865.

Who's joining us for Juneteenth in Joppa-Joppee?

Just a quick and friendly reminder to drop by on Friday, June 19th at 1:00 PM at South Central Park, 4753 Fellows Lane!

Traditionally, we celebrate on Saturdays, but this year we'll be gathering on Friday for an afternoon of fellowship, history, and community. We're excited to welcome Dallas Area Habitat for Humanity and Rose M Turknett Cancer Network Inc as vendors, and of course, we'll be serving up that good Southern food with all the fixin's! 🍗🍽️

This year's celebration will look a little different as we begin preparing for an even bigger occasion our 155th Joppa-Joppee Celebration next year!

Come reconnect with family, friends, neighbors, and fellow supporters at our Joppa-Joppee Family Reunion as we honor our history, celebrate our resilience, and look ahead to our future.

We are incredibly proud of each of you and all that you have accomplished. Your hard work, determination, and perseverance have brought you to this milestone, and we celebrate your success as you prepare for the next chapter of your journey. To all of our graduates, we wish you continued success, growth, and endless opportunities. Keep reaching for your dreams and making our community proud!

What an incredible way to celebrate the end of the school year!

A huge THANK YOU to everyone who came out and made this event so special. The foam party was a huge hit and helped keep everyone cool while having fun in the sun!

A special thank you to Ms. Kim and Joppy Momma's Farm for providing such an amazing hands-on experience. From harvesting cucumbers, tomatoes, and blackberries to collecting fresh eggs from the coop, there was something exciting around every corner. The sunflowers, purple potatoes, and all the learning opportunities made for a truly memorable day.

We are also grateful for the Joppy Book Stop, donated by Dallas Area Habitat for Humanity. This wonderful community project encourages everyone to take a book, read it, and return it so others can enjoy it too.

Thank you to Dallas Police Department- South Central and all of the volunteers whose hard work and dedication made this event possible. Your time, energy, and support helped create a day filled with fun, learning, and fellowship.

And we certainly can't forget our friends at TAMKO Building Products. Thank you not only for sponsoring this event but also for showing up, serving alongside us, and sharing in the fellowship. Your support means so much to our community.

Today is Election Day! Polls open from 7am-7pm.. Voting will NOT be at Gethsemane BC. You can vote at the Highland Hills Library or MLK Center; those are the closest locations.

Also, there will NOT be a neighborhood association meeting tonight. Please contact us if you would like police or code stats.
