The Gaston County Board of Commissioners have tasked Gaston Cooperative Extension and Gaston Natural Resources to revamp/revise the 2009 Farmland Protection Plan. Fourteen years later, the county’s agriculture sector has shifted in a number of ways and development has grown by leaps and bounds. To keep up with these changing times, it is important to involve landowners, farmers, community stakeholders, and others with knowledge about agriculture to learn about the needs and concerns of local farmers/agribusinesses and to identify barriers and opportunities in preserving greenspace/farmland and support for our local agribusinesses. Your input helps shape community goals and helps community partners implement policies and programs to achieve our goals. Buy-in from the community is essential in the process of preserving open space/farmland.

In an effort to get as much information and input from our community and key stakeholders, we are holding a drop-in Farmland Protection Plan Community Meeting on Thursday, November 16th from 4 pm to 6 pm at the Gaston Citizens Resource Center, 1303 Dallas-Cherryville Hwy, Dallas, NC. We are seeking input on challenges and opportunities pertaining to local land policies, support for market infrastructure, how to mitigate high input costs, farmland succession, and support for new and small farms.

Please plan to attend to provide crucial input into the planning process for our community and to ensure that we include a pathway to preserving greenspace/farmland.
