It’s always the wildest day of the summer! 🐍 The Creature Teacher paid a visit to the Crandall-Combine Community Library, and it’s no surprise this remains our most popular event every single year. The room was packed with families getting an up-close look at some exotic animals!

🇺🇸⚔️ Happy Father's Day, Pirate Nation! ⚔️🇺🇸

This Father's Day, Crandall ISD celebrates all the Pirate Pops, dads, grandfathers, and father figures who mentor, protect, and inspire our community. We are grateful for your strength and guidance.

Did you know the history behind this special day? The first official Father's Day celebration was held in Washington state on June 19, 1910, following a campaign by Sonora Smart Dodd. She wanted to honor her father, a Civil War veteran who raised six children single-handedly. After decades of local and state recognition, President Richard Nixon signed it into law as a permanent national holiday in 1972.

Today, we honor that legacy. Thank you for making a difference.

We’re posting this at exactly 3:24 AM, because this is the precise astronomical time of the summer solstice, which is also the first day of summer.

While most of our students, families, and staff are fast asleep, the Earth just reached a major milestone in its trip around the sun. Here are three fun science facts about the summer solstice:

It’s a single moment, not a whole day: The solstice isn’t actually a 24-hour event. It is the exact geometric instant when the Northern Hemisphere is tilted at its maximum angle (23.5 degrees) directly toward the sun. 🌍

The "Sun Stands Still": The word solstice comes from the Latin words sol (sun) and sistere (to stand still). Today, the sun reaches its highest point in our sky and appears to briefly pause before its path begins shifting southward again. 🌅

The longest day, but not the hottest: While today gives us the most daylight hours of the year, it’s usually not our hottest day. That honor goes to late July or August because of "seasonal lag"—it takes a few weeks for the Earth's oceans and landmasses to fully warm up. 🌡️

Today, Crandall ISD joins communities across the country in recognizing Juneteenth – a day that marks freedom and the continued importance of learning from our nation’s history.

Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, when enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, learned they were free more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued. In 2021, Juneteenth officially became a federal holiday in the United States.

As we celebrate the summer with our families and community, we also recognize the significance of this day and the history it represents.
