Vice Chief of Naval Operations Adm. James Kilby visited Surface Combat Systems Training Command Great Lakes (SCSTC) Great Lakes (GL) onboard Naval Station Great Lakes, May 28. During his visit, Kilby had the opportunity to test and experience our newest Virtual Maintenance Trainer (VMT) for Electronics Technicians that allows Sailors to work through fault codes and become familiar with the same equipment they will operate and maintain aboard our ships. The VMT provides students with realistic, hands-on troubleshooting experience in a safe and innovative learning environment designed to better prepare them for the Fleet. He also toured the T-1 Lab alongside our Fire Controlmen students, seeing firsthand the critical hands-on training our Sailors receive every day. The T-1 Lab provides students with instruction in signal tracing, system troubleshooting, and basic radar operation, helping build the foundational technical skills required to operate and maintain advanced combat systems equipment throughout the Fleet. Kilby saw firsthand how SCSTC GL is providing the best and highest technical level of training to our junior Sailors in the shortest amount of time ensuring the delivery of our main weapon system - a skilled, prepared and combat-ready Sailor!

Sonar Technicians (Surface) (STG) are an integral part of the U.S. Navy and are key facets of the remarkable team that makes up Surface Combat Systems Training Command (SCSTC).
Some of the invaluable support STGs provide to the U.S. Navy includes:

➡️ Operating sonar sensors and underwater fire control systems.
➡️ Operating underwater communications equipment as well as various power tools.
➡️ Identifying and reporting data from sounds produced by surface ships, torpedoes, submarines, evasion devices, sonar transmissions, marine life and natural phenomena.
➡️ Identifying the characteristics, functions and effects of controlled jamming and evasive devices on sonar operations.
➡️ Preparing and interpreting sonar messages and maintaining charts and plots.
➡️Performing preventive and corrective maintenance on sonar equipment and underwater fire control systems.

SCSTC’s Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) Tactical Employment Trainer (ATET) provides high-fidelity, tactical employment training ensuring combat-ready Sailors! This trainer is part of the Director, Surface Warfare’s (OPNAV N96) program of record, Surface Training Program (STP) (previously Surface Training Advanced Virtual Environment – STAVE), which was introduced in 2013 as a means to invest in training technologies, devices, and facilities to improve the effectiveness, efficiency, and availability of all surface training.

Sailors from the Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer USS Frank E. Petersen Jr. (DDG 121) complete Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) training at SCSTC Det Middle Pacific (MIDPAC), 15 May. This training was completed in SCSTC Det MIDPAC’s ASW Virtual Operator Trainer (VOT) to enhance the tactical proficiency of our warfighters. The ASW VOT is part of the Director, Surface Warfare’s (OPNAV N96) program of record, Surface Training Program (STP) (previously Surface Training Advanced Virtual Environment – STAVE), which was introduced in 2013 as a means to invest in training technologies, devices, and facilities to improve the effectiveness, efficiency, and availability of all surface training. A key tenet of our approach is to immerse trainees in realistic real world training environments by emulating, simulating, or providing the physical elements of the equipment and operating conditions.
