"Croton-on-Hudson Mayor Brian Pugh said the system was connected to the grid earlier this year. The system’s owner, Altus, pays the village $473,922.33 annually, helping the village keep under the property tax cap."

"A new solar canopy has opened at the Croton-Harmon train station. A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held Thursday to welcome the newly constructed canopy. The project comes as the village expands its solar canopy and battery storage initiative. The commuter parking lot has been transformed into approximately 4.2 megawatts of solar generation paired with battery storage."

Yesterday afternoon, our three riverfront communities gathered at the “Reaching Through the Shadow” Memorial to observe the 25th anniversary of 9/11. Together, we honored the lives lost that morning and in the years that followed, with deep gratitude for the first responders who ran toward danger. Thank you to the Village of Buchanan and the Town of Cortlandt for partnering with Croton-on-Hudson in remembrance.

“This carport array shows environmental leadership and fiscal responsibility are one and the same. Thank you to NYSERDA, Altus Power, and Columbia University for the partnership and commitment that made this project possible. Transforming our commuter lot into a source of reliable, clean power brings hundreds of thousands of dollars in lease revenue directly to the Village every year. This carport solar array is helping us balance our budgets without raising the tax rate and keeping money in our residents’ pockets where it belongs,” said Croton-on-Hudson Mayor Brian Pugh.

How does Croton-on-Hudson stay under the property tax cap while overrides rise statewide?Through the creation of new revenue sources like our solar carports, smart-growth development that steadily expands our local tax base, and carefully managing spending.

"Local governments, school and fire districts across New York and Long Island are increasingly looking to raise property taxes above the state’s 2% cap as fiscal pressures and costs continue to rise. Statewide, 45% of cities, 35.5% of villages, and 28.6% of towns said they planned to override their tax cap for fiscal 2026, according to a report by state Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli. Additionally, nearly one-fourth of New York’s counties, 31.5% of fire districts and 4.9% of schools indicated they planned to do so as well, according to the report released Aug. 20. On Long Island, a total of 75 cities, towns, villages and fire and school districts said they planned to override their tax levy cap in fiscal 2026, a 13.6% increase from 66 in fiscal 2022, according to data from the comptroller’s office. The number has soared in recent years with local government leaders citing the high rate of inflation and rising costs such as for healthcare, pensions and utility and oil prices. At the same time, sales tax growth has been moderate and pandemic-related federal aid has dwindled, according to the comptroller’s office."

With the end of summer, I’m still reflecting on the inspiring , which across the USA to find common ground and friendship right here in Croton. A huge thank you to the incredible teachers, organizers, and volunteers who dedicated their time this summer to give our young people an experience they will carry with them for the rest of their lives.

Thank you to everyone for working toward a safe start to the school year. Protecting our residents requires both smart infrastructure and active enforcement. Traffic safety is consistently the top safety concern among residents. From improved crosswalks to more police patrols, our village is responding. On behalf of the Board and the Croton community, I wanted to thank the dedicated volunteers of the Bicycle Pedestrian Committee, the Police Advisory Committee, our police officers, our DPW and all our residents for doing their part to keep our streets safe for everyone. westchester.news12.com/new-staircase-project-in-croton-on-hudson-aims-to-make-school-walks-safer News 12 Westchester
