I got a question for my fellow "ground pounders" and IMT people. I am making a backup tracking stick and bought a fabric measuring tape to glue on it. It has a inches only on one side and a combo inches/cm on the another side. Which side should I use?

Learning the age of tracks and sign are just as important in tracking as being able to spot and identify tracks and signs. Just like deployment of K9 units, knowing which K9 is trained to find fresh scent compared to older scents.

A tracker should know how to age sign. For example, if a person has been missing for 2 hours, 2 days, or 7 days, we should know the difference. Here is a good example in snow.”

When you are near your Rescue Truck with your set equipment that is great. When you are out in "no man's land" and limited on your equipment sometimes you have to think outside the box. This is why you train, not just from one class and one time to get your certificate, you keep training and learn more than just one way. The day that you think that you think that you can't learn anything new about being a first responder then you need to get out.

OMG! Is that a hand ascender as a mechanical advantage tractor? What in the world are we doing? Doesn’t this damage the rope? Lmao! Understand your tools. Understand how your tools ACTUALLY work. Don’t listen to anyone without researching yourself. Just because you learned something in your county or state fire academy, doesn’t mean that’s the only tool that can be used. The “fire way” is NOT the only way. In fact, rope rescue was established in our country over 80 years before the “fire way” came out. Gear fear is common and it’s toxic. Just because someone says they’ve been doing something for 25 years doesn’t mean that they’ve been doing it right. We hear this statement very often in our courses.

I know in the 8100 class we don't teach the bowline knot but this is a good way to tie it one handed and you can figure out how to maneuver the running end on the inside of the loop.
