Twenty-five years later, Cornwall still remembers one of our own. Read this tribute to Kenneth Kumpel, the monument at Chadeayne Circle, and the neighbors we lost.

Twenty-five years ago today, our nation was attacked, and 2,977 lives were lost in a single morning. First responders ran toward the fire. Neighbors helped strangers. And a country that had been divided stood together.
Here in Cornwall, that morning took one of our own. Kenneth B. Kumpel, a firefighter with FDNY Ladder 25 and a volunteer with Highland Engine Company, was on duty when his firehouse was called to the World Trade Center. He was 42. A former New York City police officer, a devoted husband to Nancy and father to Greg and Carl, and a craftsman who built his familyโs home here on the Hudson, he never came home. His sons followed him into the FDNY, carrying on his legacy.
In 2015, our community dedicated a monument to him at Chadeayne Circle: etched granite, a bronze helmet, and a piece of steel recovered from the towers. That steel came to us through Nick Visconti, a retired FDNY deputy chief from Cornwall-on-Hudson who helped build the monument and later died from the effects of his work at Ground Zero. The monument stands as a permanent reminder that 9/11 reached even our quiet corner of Orange County.
Orange County lost 44 of its own that day. Cornwall lost Kenneth. And every year since, Highland Engine #2 has gathered the town at that circle to remember not just the names, but the neighbors, the fathers, the volunteers who ran toward danger.
That spirit of unity, courage, and service is what we honor on Patriot Day. It is also what guides this campaign: keeping our community safe, our emergency services strong, and our neighbors looking out for one another, the same way America came together on September 11, 2001.
We will never forget those we lost. And we will never stop working to keep our town the safe, wonderful place it is.
May God bless the victims, the survivors, the first responders, and the United States of America.๐บ๐ธ
