“Well now,” Wally says, settlin’ back in his rocking chair, “I’ve been hearin’ a lot of talk around town lately about that proposed hotel down by the river.”

He takes a slow sip of his coffee.

“Seems like just about everybody’s got an opinion on it - and I reckon that’s a good thing. Means folks care about Conway.”

Wally nods. “From what I understand, they’re talkin’ about a hotel along the Waccamaw… somewhere near the Riverwalk. More folks comin’ to visit, maybe stay a while, maybe see what makes this place special.”

“But I’ve also heard the concerns too,” he adds. “Parking, traffic, how it might change the look and feel of downtown… and whether it still feels like the Conway we all know.”

He looks out toward the river for a moment.

“You know, Conway’s always been a town that grows… just a little at a time. Not all at once. And every time somethin’ new comes along, folks stop and ask — ‘Is this good for us?’”

Wally smiles. “Truth is, there’s not always a simple answer.”

“Some folks see opportunity — more people discoverin’ Conway, more life downtown, more reasons for folks to stay a little longer.”

“Others see concern — wantin’ to protect what makes this place feel like home.”

He lifts his mug. “And I reckon both of those come from the same place… carin’ about this town.”

Wally leans back. “I’ve learned over the years, the best thing a community can do isn’t just agree… it’s talk. Listen. Share thoughts. And make sure whatever comes next still feels like Conway.”

He smiles. “So I’m curious…”

👉 “What do y’all think about the idea of a hotel in downtown Conway?”

☕🌿 Waccamaw Wally on Picking Back Up

“Well now,” Wally says with a quiet smile, settlin’ back in his rocking chair, “funny how time gets away from ya sometimes.”

“Feels like just yesterday folks were talkin’ about snow on the riverbanks… and now here we are, a little further down the road, with the days stretchin’ out and the air feelin just a touch different.”

He takes a slow sip of his coffee.

“I’ve always liked this part of the year,” he says. “Not quite winter, not quite spring… just a little bit of both. Kinda like life itself sometimes.”

Wally glances out toward the Waccamaw. “River don’t rush through this season. It just keeps movin’, same as always. And whether you’ve been busy, slowed down, or just tryin’ to catch your breath… it’s still there waitin’ on ya.”

He chuckles softly. “Truth is, you don’t have to start over just because a little time passed. You just pick back up where you left off.”

“Maybe that’s a walk downtown… maybe it’s sittin’ by the river… maybe it’s finally gettin’ around to somethin’ you’ve been puttin’ off.”

Wally lifts his mug. “Point is - you’re still here. The town’s still here. And there’s still plenty of good days ahead.”

He smiles. “Around Conway, we don’t worry too much about perfect timing… we just keep on goin’.”

“Well hey there, Conway — Waccamaw Wally here, and I’ll tell ya what… this forecast’s got me smilin’. We start off Tuesday mostly sunny around 65°, then look what rolls in Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday — highs climbin’ into the 70’s, even flirtin’ with the upper 70’s by Friday. That’s the kind of stretch that makes a man start lookin’ at his boat keys.”

“Cloudy skies hang around midweek, but don’t let that fool you — warm air’s warm air. When we get three days like that in a row, the river changes its mood. The water settles a little different, the turtles start showin’ up on the logs, and you can almost hear the fish sayin’, ‘Alright now… we’re wakin’ up.’ I might just have to get the boat out and do a little early fishin’ before the weekend showers move in.”

“Saturday brings a chance of AM showers, Sunday stays unsettled with more rain and cooler temps, and by Monday we’re back to mostly sunny but noticeably cooler again. That’s March in Conway — warm tease, little rain, then back to jacket weather.”

“But I’ll tell ya this — three warm days in a row? That’s not an accident. That’s the season startin’ to lean forward.”

“Well now,” Wally says with a hopeful grin, settlin’ back in his rocking chair, “I’ll be honest with ya… I’m about ready for this cold weather to pack up and head on out.”

He chuckles. “Don’t get me wrong — the snow was somethin’ to see, and cold mornings make the coffee taste a little better. But around this time of year, my eyes start lookin’ for different signs.”

“I start watchin’ the river more closely. When the water warms just a touch, you’ll see fish start jumpin’ again — not just one here and there, but enough to make you pause mid-sip and smile. That’s when I know things are changin’.”

Wally leans forward. “Folks always ask when spring really starts around Conway. Truth is, it’s different every year. The earliest last spring freeze we’ve ever had was February 7th, way back in 2000. The latest was April 26th, back in 1911. So most years, it all averages out somewhere around late March.”

He smiles. “That tells me we’re closer than it feels.”

“And here’s somethin’ folks don’t always notice,” Wally adds. “Over the month of February, we gain about 50 minutes of daylight. Might not sound like much, but you feel it. Evenings last a little longer. The sun hangs around just enough to lift your spirits.”

“Before long, jackets turn into flannels. Flannels turn into short sleeves. You don’t mind stayin’ down by the river a little longer. The birds get louder. The days stretch out. And fishing starts feelin’ less like endurance and more like enjoyment.”

Wally laughs softly. “I always say winter reminds you to slow down — but spring reminds you why you love bein’ outside in the first place.”

He lifts his mug and looks toward the water. “So if you’re feelin’ tired of the cold, hang in there. The light’s comin’ back, the river’s startin’ to wake up… and around Conway, that usually means spring’s just around the bend.”

“Well hey there, Conway — Waccamaw Wally here, coffee in hand and keepin’ an eye on what the next few days have in store for us. Thursday kicks off with AM showers, a chilly 39° for the high and 26° overnight, so keep that jacket close and don’t trust the driveway to be dry. Friday calms down a good bit with partly cloudy skies and a nicer high around 52°, low near 33°. Saturday looks like the pick of the bunch — sunny, crisp, and pleasant with 49°/23°, and Sunday stays mostly sunny with 44°/31°, which is the kind of weather that makes you want to step outside just to breathe it in. Then Monday turns partly cloudy and warms up to about 59° with a low near 39°, so we’ll be creepin’ back upward a little.”

“Now let me give you a little teaser… because I’ve been peekin’ at that long-range forecast, and wouldn’t you know it — next week’s numbers are flirtin’ with the 60’s. And around here, you don’t just see that on a screen… you start feelin’ it show up in little ways. Sometimes it’s the way the frogs start chirpin’ a little earlier in the evenin’, like they’re testin’ the waters. Sometimes the river changes its mood — runs a touch steadier, smells a little more like spring, and the air just don’t bite quite as hard when the sun drops. Don’t mean we’re done with winter — not in Conway — but it does mean the seasons might be startin’ to shift their weight.”

“So enjoy these cooler days we’ve got right now, and keep one eye on that warm-up ahead… because if those 60’s hold, you’ll see Conway come back to life in a hurry.”

“And before I go, don’t forget — anytime you want to check the weather around here, you can always find it over at GrandStrandWeather.com/Conway. And while you’re at it, swing on by ConwayLiving.com too — that’s where we keep up with what’s goin’ on around town. I’ll be right here keepin’ an eye on the river, the sky, and that coffee pot.”

“Well now,” Wally says, rocking easy on his porch with a warm cup of coffee, “it sure was somethin’ watchin’ that snow fall over the weekend.”

“Snow don’t come around Conway very often, so folks slowed down to watch it — kids playin’, neighbors steppin’ outside, the riverbanks turnin’ white for a little while. And just as quietly as it came, it was nice watchin’ it melt away too… the sun comin’ back out, the river keepin’ on like nothin’ ever happened.”

He smiles. “Snow has a way of remindin’ you to pause — even if only for a moment.”

And then Wally eases back a bit in his rocking chair.

“February’s always been a funny little stretch of time to me.”

“The holidays are long gone. The New Year’s excitement has settled down. And by now, most folks have had a full month to see how their big plans for the year are really shapin’ up.”

“This part of the year don’t get much attention — but I’ve always thought it mattered more than folks realize.”

“January’s all about promises. February’s where you find out which ones stick.”

Wally looks out toward the river, moving slow and steady like it always has. “Around Conway, this is when things quiet down just enough for you to hear yourself think. The river’s still doin’ its thing. Downtown’s breathin’ easy. Folks are back into their routines — work, school, coffee with friends.”

“And that’s when real progress happens,” he says. “Not during fireworks or big celebrations… but during ordinary days, when you show up anyway.”

He chuckles softly. “I’ve seen a lot of years start with big talk and fade quick. But I’ve also seen folks make small changes in February that ended up changin’ their whole year — and sometimes their whole life.”

Wally lifts his mug. “So if 2026 hasn’t gone exactly how you pictured yet, that’s alright. The year’s still young. You’ve already proven you can keep goin’. Now it’s just about settlin’ in, stayin’ steady, and lettin’ time do its work.”

He smiles again. “Around here, we trust the slow seasons. The river always has.”

Snow In Conway 👀❄️

“Well now,” Wally says, rockin’ easy on his front porch overlooking the river - coffee mug warming his hands, “I’ve seen a lot of winters come and go around Conway… but I can tell you plain as day — snow like this still makes me stop and stare.”

“Folks are talkin’ this morning about these five inches we just got — and rightly so. That’s rare for around here. But truth be told, this ain’t the first time Conway’s been caught by surprise.”

Wally smiles and nods. “I remember Christmas of 1989 clear as yesterday. We woke up to nearly a foot of snow in places — more than most of us had ever seen in our lives. Roads were quiet, kids were sleddin’ on anything that sloped even a little, and the whole town just slowed down together.”

He chuckles. “Back then, we didn’t have smartphones or social media — just neighbors callin’ one another, folks steppin’ out on their porches, and everybody sayin’, ‘Can you believe this?’”

“Then just last January, here comes another big one. And now here we are again — snow on the riverbanks, white on the trees, and folks makin’ memories whether they planned on it or not.”

Wally looks out toward the Waccamaw. “That’s the thing about snow in Conway. It doesn’t happen often — but when it does, it stitches itself into your memory. You remember where you were, who you were with, and how quiet everything felt.”

He lifts his mug with a grin. “So if you’re wonderin’ what’s goin’ on… I reckon it’s just Conway remindin’ us that even after all these years, it can still surprise us.”

“Well hey there, Conway — Waccamaw Wally here, settlin’ in for a cold night ahead. With that Cold Weather Advisory runnin’ from 10 o’clock tonight through 9 in the mornin’, it’s one of those evenings where you go on and put an extra log on the fire and make sure everything’s buttoned up tight. When I was growin’ up, nights like this meant Mama would close off a few rooms, Daddy would tend the fireplace before bed, and there was always a pot of coffee or somethin’ warm sittin’ on the stove just in case somebody woke up chilly. We didn’t worry much — we just planned ahead. That’s still good advice tonight. Bring the pets inside, check on your neighbors if you can, and don’t be shy about another blanket or two. It’s one of those ‘slow down, stay warm, and enjoy the quiet’ kind of nights. I’ll be keepin’ warm right here with my coffee, and we’ll all thaw out together once the sun comes up.”

01/25/2026

“Well now,” Waccamaw Wally says with a soft grin, settlin’ back in his chair, “every time I walk past the Horry County Museum, I can’t help but chuckle a little… ’cause to me, that’ll always be my old schoolhouse.”

“Long before it held exhibits and artifacts, that brick building was a school. That’s where I spent my younger years — walkin’ those halls, totin’ books that felt heavier than they needed to be, and tryin’ my best not to get called on in class.”

Wally laughs. “We didn’t know it then, but that place was teachin’ us more than just readin’ and arithmetic. It taught us responsibility, respect, and how to look out for one another — Conway-style.”

“I remember standin’ out front with friends after the bell rang, talkin’ about nothin’ in particular. Friday nights meant football talk. Mornings meant hurryin’ so you weren’t late.. And many times I would find myself lookin out the windows in class wishin' I was on the river fishing with my cane pole or catchin' frogs with my bare hands.”

Wally pauses for a moment. “Now folks walk through that same building learnin’ about Conway’s history and other areas around these parts… and I reckon that’s just about right. That school helped shape a whole lot of us, and in its own way, it’s still teachin’ — just to a new generation.”

Wally smiles. “Funny how places change, but the memories don’t.”

“Well hey there, Conway — Waccamaw Wally here, coffee in hand and keepin’ a close eye on this weekend weather chatter. After lookin’ over the latest forecasts, it’s soundin’ more and more like we may dodge the worst of it around here. Right now, it’s lookin’ like mostly rain, with maybe just a light glazing of ice if temperatures dip at the wrong time late Saturday night or early Sunday. That kind of set-up can still make bridges and back roads slick for a bit, but it’s not lookin’ like a major ice storm for us at this point. As always, when we’re right on that line between rain and freezing temps, things can change a little — so I’ll keep checkin’ GrandStrandWeather.com/Conway and let y’all know if anything shifts. For now, this looks more like a ‘slow down and be mindful’ situation than a ‘panic and worry’ one.”

“Well hey there, Conway — Waccamaw Wally here, standin’ by the river with my coffee and enjoyin’ this downright warm weather we’ve got today. When it’s pushin’ close to 70 degrees in January, you know South Carolina’s up to one of its tricks. Now don’t get me wrong, today feels great, but it’s also a reminder of why folks are keepin’ an eye on the weekend forecast. When we swing from warm sunshine like this to colder air movin’ in, that’s when the weather can get a little complicated. Some forecasts still show mainly rain, while others hint at colder air sneakin’ in late Saturday into Sunday, which could mean a touch of wintry weather if everything lines up just right. It’s not a sure thing yet — but it is one of those times we don’t ignore. I’ll be keepin’ tabs on it over at GrandStrandWeather.com/Conway, and I’ll let y’all know how it’s shapin’ up as we get closer. For now though… soak up this warm day. January doesn’t give us many of ‘em.”

So, what do you think? Freezing Rain a 'comin?

Well hey there, Conway — Waccamaw Wally here, coffee in hand and keepin’ an eye on the days ahead. We’ve got some nice weather early in the week with sunshine and milder afternoons, but as we head toward the weekend, things turn a little cooler and wetter. Friday stays mostly cloudy, and by Saturday we’ll be watchin’ a better chance for rain move in. With those colder temperatures hangin’ around late in the weekend, it’s one of those times we’ll want to keep an eye on the forecast — just in case a little wintry weather tries to sneak into the picture. I’ll be checkin’ GrandStrandWeather.com/Conway, and I’ll keep you posted.
