The Cherokee County Sheriff's Office would like to extend a sincere thank you to Moates Excavation for the generous donation of multiple LifeVac devices. With your donation we have enough for every patrol and detective vehicle in our fleet.

As a rural county, our deputies are often among the first to arrive at medical emergencies.

Having LifeVac devices readily available in our vehicles provides another potentially lifesaving tool that can be used during choking emergencies while waiting for EMS personnel to arrive.

A LifeVac is a non-battery operated, portable airway clearance device designed to help remove an object that is blocking a person's airway when traditional methods, such as back blows or abdominal thrusts, have not been successful. The device uses suction to help dislodge the obstruction and restore airflow.

We are grateful for community partners like Moates Excavation who invest in the safety and well-being of our residents. Their generosity will help ensure our deputies are better equipped to serve Cherokee County when seconds matter most.

Thank you, Moates Excavation, for your support of local law enforcement and the communities we serve.

โ˜€๏ธ Summer Vehicle Safety Reminder โ˜€๏ธ

Before hitting the road this summer, take a few minutes to make sure your vehicle is ready for the heat.

โœ… Check your A/C to ensure it's working properly.
โœ… Inspect tires for proper inflation, tread depth, and signs of damage.
โœ… Check coolant, oil, windshield washer fluid, and other fluid levels.
โœ… Inspect belts, hoses, battery, lights, and wiper blades for wear.
โœ… Make sure floor mats are secured and not interfering with pedals.
โœ… Check for vehicle recalls and complete any free safety repairs.

๐Ÿš— Most importantly: Never leave children or pets unattended in a vehicle. Even on mild days, temperatures inside a vehicle can rise to deadly levels within minutes.

A little preventative maintenance can help prevent breakdowns and keep your family safe all summer long.

Kansas Window Tint Laws โ€“ Know Before You Tint! ๐Ÿš”

Car window tinting laws in Kansas were enacted in 1987

Window tint can help reduce heat and glare, but Kansas law sets specific requirements for vehicles operated on public roadways.

๐Ÿ“– K.S.A. 8-1749a, K.S.A. 8-1749b, K.S.A. 8-1749c

What is a Sun Screening Device?
A sun screening device is any film or material applied to vehicle windows to reduce the effects of sunlight.

Kansas Requirements:

โœ… Windshield tint must:
โ€ข Be nonreflective
โ€ข Not be red, yellow, or amber in color
โ€ข Be installed only along the top of the windshield and not extend below the AS1 line

What is the ASโ€‘1 line? It is a regulatory boundary on a windshield which is approximately 5โ€“6 inches from the top of the windshield. It marks the lowest point where tint or a sun strip may legally be applied.

โœ… Side and rear window tint must:
โ€ข Be nonreflective
โ€ข Allow at least 35% total light transmission

๐Ÿš” Law enforcement vehicles are exempt from the 35% light transmission requirement.

Medical Exception
Drivers or occupants utilizing this exception must possess a signed statement from a licensed physician or optometrist explaining the medical necessity. (see statute for more information)

Headlight Covers
Kansas law also prohibits headlamps from being covered with any tint, film, glaze, or application that is highly reflective or otherwise nontransparent when the lamps are not in operation.

โš ๏ธ Violations of Kansas window tint laws may result in a citation and are classified as a misdemeanor offense.

Key Definitions
๐Ÿ”น Light Transmission โ€“ The amount of light that passes through the window and tint.
๐Ÿ”น Luminous Reflectance โ€“ The amount of light reflected outward from the window and tint.
๐Ÿ”น Nonreflective โ€“ Designed to absorb light rather than reflect it.

Before installing window tint, verify that it meets Kansas requirements. A reputable installer should be familiar with state regulations, but the vehicle owner is ultimately responsible for compliance.

๐Ÿš— Safe driving starts with maintaining visibility for yourself and others on the roadway.
