The Gessner Tutwiler Smith House She was head of Modern Languages. This house is also known as the Pieschels' House, who are the current owners and inhabitants. http://muw.edu

This house was first owned by an original faculty member at the first public college for women in America, now called Mississippi University for Women or "The W." It is located across the street from the Mississippi University for Women, which celebrated its 125th anniversary just last year.

We are proud to live in the first house designed and built by the recentally widowed Gessner
Tutwiler Smith who spent most of her working life as Mistress of modern languages on the II & C campus. She lived in it with her young son Paoli, and several extra faculty boarders! The house was completed in 1909.
